Miami Dolphins throwbacks as primary kit? Sadly, no, not at this time.

MIAMI GARDENS — The Dolphins’ throwback uniforms are universally admired and adored.

But it doesn’t sound like Miami plans to make them the primary game day uniforms any time soon.

”I love our throwbacks,” Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel said recently at the Dolphins Challenge Cancer. “I love when we wear them. I love celebrating our history. I think they’re very appropriate for celebrating our history. And it keeps them special that we wear them a couple of times a year.”

Ultimately, this is a decision made by Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, who commissioned a change to the current logo and uniforms.

Among the people who cherish the throwbacks are current coach Mike McDaniel, former coaches Brian Flores and Adam Gase, legendary quarterback Dan Marino, and current players such as quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle and star pass rushers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb.

Week 16: Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (1) attempts a pass against the Dallas Cowboys at Hard Rock Stadium. The Dolphins won the game, 22-20, while wearing throwback uniforms.

Pretty much everyone loves the colors of the throwbacks as well as the logo design and uniform features.

It would cost a lot of money to scrap all of the current Dolphins logos at the stadium and facility.

But for Ross, it’s not about money. He just likes the new logo and uniforms.

Garfinkel has spearheaded a remarkable transformation of Hard Rock Stadium and the surrounding grounds.

Miami now hosts F1 racing and professional tennis in addition to major events such as concerts and music festivals.

“We’re proud of the fact that it's the only place you can see Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen and Serena Williams and Roger Federer and Jay-Z and Beyonce and Messi and Neymar and obviously all the great NFL players and the Dolphins,” Garfinkel said. “And, you know, we have the College Football Championship coming in ‘26 and the World Cup, with seven matches coming in ‘26. We have a (CFP) semifinal this year. And the Hurricanes. We’re proud of the fact that it's somewhere where it's probably the only place in the world actually all of those different places merge in one place.”

Garfinkel played a role in Miami’s strategic decision to tear down the football program to its studs in 2019, with hope of re-launching with a championship-caliber roster.

Miami had a roster that should be able to compete for a conference championship in 2024.

It must also be noted the Dolphins do not have a playoff win since Ross bought into the team in 2009.

Garfinkel feels good about the state of the program, however, as led by general manager Chris Grier and McDaniel.

“Very good,” he said. “I have and Steve (Ross) and I have tremendous confidence in the football leadership. And Mike and Chris and the decisions that they make. Everybody’s working together really well, which is important. Super excited about the future.”

Garfinkel suggested Ross deserves more praise for all he’s done in Miami.

“He doesn’t get enough credit,” he said. “Steve’s vision. And his willingness to invest private money into this thing. He really cares about Miami. He really cares about doing things first class. And he wants to win more than anybody in this organization. He gives us the autonomy and the resources to do big things.”
