Miami Dolphins' Mike McDaniel: How Tua Tagovailoa's added mobility helps offense

MIAMI GARDENS -- Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel meets with reporters Tuesday morning.

Highlights:

  • CB Cam Smith's injury won't keep him out of training camp or preseason games.

  • LT Terron Armstead, who has rested to this point during practice, will vary his participation in practices this summer based on how he's feeling. Armstead said he will work for the first time Tuesday. McDaniel adds, "If there's anything he could have done, he would have done it" last season, when he dealt with multiple ailments.

  • On Tua Tagovailoa looking more nimble: "There's always opportunities from a competitor's standpoint to get better." Talks about discipline required to adjust his diet.

  • On how new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver is connecting with players, who have offered rave reviews on him: "If you're trying to get someone to be their very best, you have to be able to reach them." Players say Weaver being an ex-player in the NFL makes a huge difference. McDaniel says he's "as happy as I've ever been as a head coach" with the connection Weaver has made.

  • On fourth-year LB Quinton Bell: When he's at his best on the edge, "people lost their minds."

  • On competition at guard: He sees guys making plays, but also some in difficult situations.

  • On players, including Tua Tagovailoa, possibly wearing protective Guardian Caps during games, not just practice: Says he leaves that up to players. Uncertain how many and which players will take advantage of it in 2024.

  • On Tagovailoa's added mobility and how it might affect play-calling: "You adjust eligibles ... so if you do break from the pocket" you have options. "It definitely adds to his game."
