Miami Dolphins' Jevon Holland jokes about being in line behind Tua Tagovailoa to get paid

MIAMI GARDENS — It’s a given that while the Miami Dolphins want to lock up safety Jevon Holland with a contract extension, the major piece of business the organization is prioritizing now involves quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Holland joked Thursday when asked about possibly getting antsy.

“It’s not like I’m dictating time on my contract because if I was dictating the time, I would’ve got paid my rookie year,” he said.

Turning serious, Holland added, “But when it comes, it comes. I can’t control none of that. Whenever they want to, I’ll pick up the phone, but I’m out here every day just trying to get better.”

Holland, 24, is entering his fourth NFL season and could make a run at his first Pro Bowl. It’s early in his time under first-year coordinator Anthony Weaver, but Holland said it’s “a blast” working with him.

“I’m having a bunch of fun,” Holland said. “He’s a fun coach to play under. He really established an exciting culture and allows us a lot of room to just grow within it, so I’m enjoying myself a lot.”

Holland reminded everyone he played nickel in college and was a cornerback in high school. By “everyone,” we include Weaver.

“I’ve told him, ‘If you want me to move around, I mean in indy drills, I’ll go to nickel and try stuff,” Holland said.

One thing the Dolphins hope Holland doesn’t experience again was his introduction to this training camp. While trying to tackle Tyreek Hill, Holland found himself airborne before landing awkwardly. It essentially ended practice for him Wednesday due to a thigh bruise.

“One minute, I was like, ‘All right, I’m running up.’ Next minute, I’m like, ‘Why are my feet above my head?’ ”

Auditioning for the Olympics, maybe?

“Not trying to,” he said. “That was involuntary, but that would be cool.”
