Mexico's Carlos Vela announces grandfather died after watching historic upset of Germany
Carlos Vela played 58 minutes during Mexico’s seismic upset of Germany in World Cup play on Sunday.
The 29-year-old forward, an integral part of Mexico’s attack, earned high praise from head coach Juan Carlos Osorio after the game.
“He was one of our best players today,” Osorio said after the 1-0 victory.
Vela announced Monday on Instagram that his grandfather had died, and one of the last things he experienced in life was watching Mexico’s victory.
“The last victory that you were able to see … I hope you left proud of me,” the post reads in English.
Vela will surely play with a heavy but inspired heart during Mexico’s next match against South Korea on Saturday.
