Midway through the second half, almost 50,000 fans who paid real and hard-earned money had had enough and began whistling at the non-action below. If they had set a record for attendance in a soccer game held in Colorado Thursday night in Denver, it wasn’t exactly worth their cash.

Even a free ticket wouldn’t have been very good value for money.

Because Mexico’s 0-0 tie with Jamaica in the group stage of the ongoing CONCACAF Gold Cup was so very boring, producing just three moments of note, cushioned by some 89 minutes of joyless pinging and passing and jogging. A tie suited both teams just fine and it showed.

Mexico played its possession game while Jamaica lurked on speedy counters. All of that was predictable. But neither team executed its plan with very much conviction. A game that kicked off at 10.35 p.m. Eastern Time had the rough effect of an over-the-counter sleeping aid.

Anyway, here are some things that happened:

Erick “Cubo” Torres nodded a header off the post with a flick that spun just away from the net and onto the frame.

A header by Jesus Molina, with Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake caught well off his line but nowhere near the corner, bounced but was cleared over the bar acrobatically by Jermaine Taylor.

And Darren Mattocks probably should have had a penalty when Hugo Ayala trundled him over.

Here are some other thoughts on this match (because this game report is probably too short to wrap up just yet):

— If the objective of a soccer game is to score goals, or at least to create chances, can you say that a soccer game really happened if neither was really accomplished?

— If 90 minutes of soccer were played, but nobody enjoyed them, do they count as entertainment?

— What is even the point of the off-year Gold Cup? Aside from generating some revenue for CONCACAF?

Anyway, Mexico is practically through to the quarterfinals with a game against Curacao left to play on Sunday. In spite of sending a B-team and being without its suspended coach, Juan Carlos Osorio.

If Jamaica ties El Salvador in its last match, the 2015 runner-up — which upset the U.S. in the semifinals then, before losing to Mexico — is through as well.

Whatever.

Let’s now all pretend this game never happened and that we didn’t waste two perfectly good hours of a Thursday night.
