Memphis Hustle coach Jason March on 100 wins, 5 years in the G League — and cold water

Saturday's Memphis Hustle win over the G League Ignite had a little extra meaning for Hustle coach Jason March — even if it took him a moment before he remembered why.

March walked in to the Landers Center locker room ready to deliver his postgame speech to the team, but he was quickly interrupted when the players jumped up and showered him with water to celebrate the milestone he'd just hit: 100 wins as a G League coach. March, who has been the Hustle's coach since 2019, is the second active G League coach to achieve that feat.

A few days after the win, March chatted with the Commercial Appeal about reaching 100 wins, what he has learned, and his proudest moments as a G League coach.

Answers have been lightly edited for brevity and clarity.

What does 100 wins mean to you?

"It's definitely something you're never expecting, especially as a coach in the G League. The first thing is, it's always about the players. We've had some great players through here — I've heard from so many of them over the past 48 hours.

"And it's about them. You don't get wins without good players. It's about all the guys that have been through here, been a part of this building process, their development process and then obviously the head coach gets the win for it. But that's what it's about."

What was the moment like after that game?

"It was really strange. As we shook hands with Ignite, I have some very close friends that are on that staff, so I wanted to make sure I talked to them. I knew if we won that game that it was 100, but as the game ended and how we played, it was the last thing on my mind.

"I was walking off the floor and I saw the fans and my wife and kids. My kids had some signs and I was kind of just in a zone of, 'What am I about to say to the team?' I don't know what I was thinking. I wasn't thinking that, I didn't really even stop. I had a message that I wanted to say to the team postgame. I started, and bang. I got hit with a lot of cold water."

What have you learned?

'You have to continue to figure things out. And we've had kind of a roller-coaster year with who's with us and who's not. A few games ago, we played with seven players. And you just have to continue to figure it out, and with that comes learning. I'm learning every day. These players are teaching me something new every day. And I hope I never get complacent with any of that, because I think the game changes.

"You're going to win some games if you're around long enough. I don't take it for granted, ever. I'm very fortunate to be here."

10 call-ups?

"That's probably the thing that means the most. The 100 wins is cool. It's a cool number as a coach. But the 10 call-ups since we've been here, that's the most important thing. That's what every one of these guys are in the G League for — trying to get their opportunity. The G League's loaded with talent. We have so many guys that are so close.

"We focus on development every single day. That's our goal with the Hustle every single day. It's not wins, it's not losses, it's developing players to try to make it to the next level."

When you took this job, did you think you'd get to 100 wins?

"No, I definitely didn't. Definitely not. To be completely honest, never thought I'd be going into Year 5 here. Never thought I'd be here this long. But I want to be here as long as (Grizzlies coach Taylor) Jenkins and (Grizzlies GM) Zach (Kleiman) will have me here. I love the situation I'm in."
