Memphis Grizzlies rally to force overtime, but fall short against Sacramento Kings
A similar theme to the Memphis Grizzlies' previous game was playing out again Monday in Sacramento. They were staying in the game against a Western Conference contender, but they were having trouble getting over the hump.
That was until their 10-1 fourth-quarter run that tied the game with 4:46 left to play. At that point, all bets were off.
Grizzlies stars Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. traded big shots with the Kings' star duo of De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis until they went to overtime.
Memphis scored the first two points, then the Kings went on a 12-0 run to put the game out of reach. The Grizzlies fell 121-111 at Golden One Center.
Bane and Jackson led the Grizzlies' offense. Jackson finished with 25 points and four blocks, and Bane had 24 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. GG Jackson had 22 points as an effective third option.
John Konchar made several hustle plays to keep the Grizzlies (23-46) in the game despite scoring just six points. He led the team with 10 rebounds and added two blocks and five steals.
Sabonis, the NBA's top rebounder, was tough to keep off the glass, finishing with 18 rebounds. Kings guard Malik Monk made big shots in overtime to give the Kings (39-28) a cushion. He scored eight consecutive overtime points and finished with 28 points off the bench.
Here are some takeaways.
Another new Grizzlies lineup
The count keeps going up. The Grizzlies officially have played more than half of their games this season with a different starting lineup. Monday was their 42nd, with Konchar, Bane, GG Jackson, Santi Aldama and Jaren Jackson Jr.
Luke Kennard missed Monday's game for personal reasons, and the team continues to deal with injuries. As a result, only eight players were active. Jake LaRavia, DeJon Jarreau and Trey Jemison came off the bench. The NBA requires teams have at least eight players active at the start of the game.
Jake LaRavia's growing confidence
LaRavia's best shot of the day didn't count. The forward was fading out of bounds in the corner when he hit a 3-pointer near the end of the first quarter over contested defense. The play was overturned after it was ruled that he had stepped out of bounds, but he had plenty more 3-point shots to get up.
This is the most confident LaRavia has looked in a Grizzlies uniform. He's taking the ball off the dribble and is not being hesitant with his shots. With GG Jackson going to the starting lineup in recent games, LaRavia has turned into the Grizzlies' best form of offense off the bench. He is also crashing the glass and becoming an effective rebounder. He finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
No more DeJon Jarreau
Hardship exceptions have helped the Grizzlies navigate through a recent wave of injuries, but those depth pieces are gone now. Wenyen Gabriel's 10-day contract expired after Saturday's loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Jarreau's 10-day ended after Monday's game. Jarreau played 17 minutes against the Kings, giving the Grizzlies depth at point guard. He finished with eight points, three rebounds and two assists.
Jordan Goodwin, who is on a games limit due to his two-way contract, was not active against the Kings. Jemison returned to the rotation now that Gabriel is gone, and Goodwin likely will do the same with Jarreau's 10-day ending.
