What Desmond Bane said about his return to lineup after missing 2 months with ankle injury

The difference was noticeable from the start. A loud cheer went through FedExForum as Desmond Bane was the first Memphis Grizzlies player introduced in pregame lineups.

Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins' scouting report that Bane still had the same “pop” despite missing two months with a sprained left ankle, proved correct on Saturday against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Memphis fell 118-112, but Bane’s return was a reminder of the impact the 6-foot-5 shooting guard can have on a game.

Bane led the Grizzlies with 22 points and added seven assists. He did so in 31 minutes, 48 seconds. The Grizzlies (23-45) were plus-11 during Bane’s playing time.

To no surprise, Bane's first performance since Jan. 12 didn't impress him

"I had a few turnovers, some stuff around the rim I got to slow down and be better at," Bane said. "A couple defensive assignments, so it was good that I was able to go out there, play and contribute, but a lot to be better at for sure."

Desmond Bane's impact on teammates

Memphis used a starting lineup that featured five players who could be in the team's rotation next season. That doesn't sound too mind blowing, but it is when you consider the Grizzlies have used 41 starting lineups. Saturday's group with Bane, Luke Kennard, GG Jackson, Santi Aldama and Jaren Jackson Jr. was arguably the Grizzlies' best pairing this season.

Bane played a lot of his minutes on the ball, which freed up opportunities for GG Jackson and other Grizzlies to get more experience.

"The defense is very aware of him," Aldama said. "Having him out there felt amazing."

Desmond Bane's scoring

GG Jackson said Bane should have shot the ball more, and maybe he's right. Bane shot 4-for-9 on 3-pointers.

Bane was his usual self when it came to pushing the ball in transition and driving to the basket.

"You definitely feel his presence out there," GG Jackson said. "Even when he's not in the action or handling the ball, he takes a defender out of the play because he's so good. I felt like he shouldn't have passed it. He said he's trying to get his rhythm back, but it was fun."

Desmond Bane's conditioning

Jenkins said he "pushed" Bane with his minute total. A close game combined with how well Bane was playing allowed the Grizzlies to play for the win, which led to Bane getting a higher minutes total than expected.

It remains unclear if Bane will be eased back with games. The Grizzlies have two more back to backs this season.

"I feel OK," Bane said. "I got my first wind. Kind of caught my legs. I'll be better for sure."
