Memphis Grizzlies say Desmond Bane, Marcus Smart out at least three more weeks
Injured Memphis Grizzlies guards Desmond Bane and Marcus Smart both will be out for at least three more weeks, the team announced Thursday night.
Bane is expected to return in three to five weeks, the team said, while Smart will be re-evaluated in three weeks.
Both players have been out for more than a month. Bane suffered a Grade 3 ankle sprain on Jan. 12, and the team initially said he would be re-evaluated in six weeks. Smart suffered a finger injury on Jan. 9 and was recently re-evaluated.
Those injuries — in addition to Ja Morant's season-ending shoulder injury suffered just before Bane and Smart went out — have torpedoed the Grizzlies' season and left them in 13th place in the Western Conference at the NBA All-Star break. There are other injured players — Brandon Clarke hasn't played all season as he recovers from an Achilles injury, while Jake LaRavia has missed more than a month but is expected to return for Friday's game (7 p.m. CT) against the Clippers at FedExForum.
Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said Clarke is still gearing up for a return this season and has been progressing in his rehab.
Smart has played in only 20 games this season after he was acquired in a trade with the Celtics last offseason. Bane has played in 37 games and was the Grizzlies' top scoring option at the beginning of the season when Morant was serving his 25-game suspension.
Even as the Grizzlies have struggled and are unlikely to contend for the playoffs this season, Jenkins has said they haven't considered shutting down injured players like Smart or Bane.
