Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins on 30-point loss to Blazers: 'This is embarrassing'
There was one word on Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins' mind after Friday night's 30-point blowout loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.
"This is embarrassing," Jenkins said postgame, part of a press conference that lasted less than 90 seconds and featured short answers from a clearly frustrated Jenkins.
"They played extremely well, and we didn't have it," he said. "Played poorly."
During a season where the Grizzlies have lost a lot but have mostly been competitive, Friday's loss might represent a low point. It certainly felt that way postgame, with Jenkins and the Grizzlies players unhappy with their performance.
"They played extremely well, and we didn't have it," Jenkins said. "Played poorly."
Grizzlies guard GG Jackson agreed with Jenkins.
"You see your fans leaving with like 8 minutes left in the game, that really sticks us as players," Jackson said. "They want to come see us play. And that's kind of like them slapping us in our faces like, 'We don't want to see you play.' We've got to change that."
Friday was the second straight home blowout loss for the Grizzlies. They were never competitive on Monday against the Brooklyn Nets, then suffered a respectable loss on the road to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday. Friday's loss to a Blazers team that's second-to-last in the Western Conference certainly didn't go according to plan.
Vince Williams Jr. said Jenkins let the players try to work through the issues during the game.
"Coach let us handle it, try to figure it out as a team instead of him having to say something to us about the situation," Williams said. "We just communicated as a team, instead of him talking to us about the situation."
There was one silver lining, though — Memphis and Portland will meet again on Saturday at FedExForum. So the Grizzlies will get a rare chance to get some revenge for Friday's loss.
"There's a lot to clean up," Jenkins said.
