Memphis Grizzlies collapse in 2nd half, lose to Blazers for 2nd straight home blowout loss

Another game, another loss for the Memphis Grizzlies.

This time it was against the lowly Portland Trail Blazers, who used a dominant third quarter to pull away from Memphis and earn a 122-92 win Friday at FedExForum in a battle of two teams eons away from the playoff conversation. Duop Reath had 18 points, Jabari Walker and Dalano Blanton each added 19 off the bench and the undermanned Blazers had six players in double figures to beat the even more undermanned Grizzlies.

It was a low-scoring first quarter with both teams severely undermanned. The Grizzlies were without Jaren Jackson Jr., John Konchar and Derrick Rose, in addition to the long-term absences of Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Marcus Smart and Brandon Clarke. The Blazers were without Deandre Ayton, Scoot Henderson, Malcolm Brogdon and Robert Williams III.

The Blazers took a six-point lead into the half thanks to 12 first-half turnovers for Memphis and 10 first-half points for Jerami Grant.

Portland quickly built a double-digit lead in the early third quarter by hitting three 3-pointers in a row, the last of which forced a quick timeout from coach Taylor Jenkins. The Blazers continued to extend the lead throughout the quarter and had built it to 19 points by the time the quarter ended.

The lead stretched past 30 points in an uncompetitive fourth quarter as most fans left the arena well before the final buzzer.

Both teams were missing most of their key players

The Grizzlies have had their season — which began with high expectations — completely derailed by an injury crisis that's meant their normal starters have spent more time on the injury report than the starting lineup. Jackson has been the one starter who's been consistently healthy, but he was out Friday with right quad tendon soreness. Jenkins said he could miss multiple games. The Blazers, who are near the bottom of the Western Conference, were also without a slew of key players. So both teams needed contributions from across the roster to compete, and the Blazers got a lot more than the Grizzlies.

Jake LaRavia had his best game of the season — and maybe of his pro career

LaRavia struggled to start his sophomore campaign with the Grizzlies and then missed more than a month with an ankle injury suffered just after the new year. But he returned after the NBA All-Star break and has been more productive, especially in Friday's game. He eclipsed his previous career-high 13 points in the early third quarter and finished with 21 points. He also connected on his first three 3-pointers, giving the Grizzlies a scoring kick on a night they desperately needed it.

It was the second straight blowout home loss for the Grizzlies

Even as Memphis has plummeted in the standings throughout the season, the Grizzlies have been mostly competitive throughout their games. But Monday's loss at home to the Nets was one of their worst performances of the season, when they were blown out from the jump. Memphis followed that up with a respectable loss at Minnesota but then turned in another listless performance Friday.

The Grizzlies won't have to wait long to right this wrong, though — these two teams will meet again on Saturday night at FedExForum.
