Memphis basketball's Penny Hardaway gets commitment from prep school guard Daniel Vieira-Tuck
Memphis basketball coach Penny Hardaway has bolstered his new-look roster's depth with a commitment from guard Daniel Vieira-Tuck.
His father, Mack, confirmed the news to The Commercial Appeal late Wednesday.
“We sent (Memphis) some film and Penny liked him right away,” Mack said. “Penny is Penny, so he recognizes talent.”
The 6-foot-4 guard from Sulphur Springs, Texas, spent the past year playing in Portugal (his mother Monica's home country) − first, for the U20 Portuguese National Team and, most recently, the 19-year-old averaged 9.1 points and 2.3 rebounds per game for S.L. Benfica of the Lisbon-based Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol.
Before that, he played for Colorado Prep (Westminster, Colo.), BigTyme Sports Prep (Rockwall, Texas) and Mansfield Timberview (Arlington, Texas). Vieira-Tuck reported offers from West Virginia, Wichita State, Iona, Long Island and Arkansas Pine-Bluff in late 2022.
Vieira-Tuck is set to leave Friday to take part in the FIBA European Championships in Romania with the U20 Portuguese National Team. He will train for a couple of weeks in Portugal, then head to Romania. He plans to report to Memphis in late July.
“He’s skilled up,” said Mack, who played at Colorado and Central Oklahoma before a lengthy overseas career that included both playing and coaching. “He can shoot. He can pass. I taught him to play the right way. He’s flashy, but he’s also very unselfish. I was always big on that.”
Vieira-Tuck joins a group of newcomers largely consisting of Division I transfers, including guards Tyrese Hunter, PJ Haggerty and Baraka Okojie, wing Colby Rogers, forward Tyreek Smith and big men Dain Dainja and Moussa Cisse. Memphis has also brought in 4-star freshman guard Jared Harris (Silsbee, Texas) and retained forward Nicholas Jourdain.
Each of those players recently arrived on campus ahead of summer workouts, which are scheduled to begin June 1.
Vieira-Tuck's addition means Hardaway has at least three open scholarships. Earlier Wednesday, ESPN reported all-AAC performer David Jones will keep his name in the NBA Draft, forgoing his final season of collegiate eligibility.
