Who are Marquette’s non-conference opponents in the 2024-25 men’s basketball season?
The 2024-25 non-conference schedule for the Marquette men's basketball team includes seven home games (one on campus), three on the road and one at a neutral site.
Here is a look at the Golden Eagles' opponents:
Nov. 4: Stony Brook, Fiserv Forum
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection (out of 364 NCAA Division 1 teams): No. 275
Opponent nickname: Seawolves
Opponent conference: Coastal Athletic Association
Head coach: Geno Ford
Player to know: Stony Brook filled its roster holes with several junior-college players, with the most promising being 6-foot-3 shooter C.J. Luster II, who shot 47.9% on three-pointers last season at Salt Lake Community College.
Notes: The season opener is part of the Marquette Challenge, a multi-team event that allows MU to have an extra home game. Also interesting is that Mark Dixon, a former MU staff member who worked closely with Oso Ighodaro, was hired to be an assistant coach under Ford.
Nov. 8: George Mason, Al McGuire Center
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection: No. 85
Opponent nickname: Patriots
Opponent conference: Atlantic 10
Head coach: Tony Skinn
Player to know: Darius Maddox, a 6-5 guard who previously played at Virginia Tech, played over 33 minutes per game and shot 41.4% on three-pointers.
Notes: The on-campus game (Little Big Town and Sugarland are playing a concert that night at Fiserv Forum) also is part of the Marquette Challenge and will be open only to students. The last game MU played at the Al McGuire Center was Nov. 10, 2022, when the Golden Eagles beat Central Michigan in front of 3,706 fans.
Nov. 11: Central Michigan, Fiserv Forum
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection: No. 262
Opponent nickname: Chippewas
Opponent conference: Mid-American Conference
Head coach: Tony Barbee
Player to know: Anthony Pritchard, a 6-2 guard, was the MAC co-defensive player of the year and a first-team all-MAC pick last season.
Notes: This is MU's final game of the Marquette Challenge. Central Michigan assistant coach Scott Cherry and MU aide Neill Berry have a long history together. Both worked under Darrin Horn (another ex-MU assistant) at South Carolina and Western Kentucky, and then Berry was on Cherry's staff when he was head coach at High Point.
Nov. 15: at Maryland, Xfinity Center
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection: No. 42
Opponent nickname: Terrapins
Opponent conference: Big Ten
Head coach: Kevin Willard
Player to know: Derik Queen, a 6-10, 245-pound forward was a consensus five-star recruit and was MVP of the McDonald's All-American game.
Notes: This is the start of MU's home-and-home series with Maryland. The schools have played only once before, in the 2019 Orlando Invitational. Maryland's team that season included guard Darryl Morsell and assistant coach DeAndre Haynes, who both joined MU when Shaka Smart was hired before the 2021-22 season.
Nov. 19: Purdue, Fiserv Forum
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection: No. 16
Opponent nickname: Boilermakers
Opponent conference: Big Ten
Head coach: Matt Painter
Player to know: Braden Smith will be one of the best guards in the country after averaging 12.0 points, 7.5 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game as a sophomore. But it will be interesting to see how the 6-0 Smith adjusts his game without two-time national player of the year Zach Edey.
Notes: This will be the fifth time the schools have played since the 2017-18 season, and they will meet again in West Lafayette, Indiana, in the 2025-26 season.
Nov. 23: vs. Georgia in Nassau, Bahamas
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection: No. 39
Opponent nickname: Bulldogs
Opponent conference: Southeastern
Head coach: Mike White
Player to know: Asa Newell, a 6-11 freshman forward, was a consensus five-star recruit at prep powerhouse Montverde Academy.
Notes: Without its usual holiday tournament, this gives MU fans a destination game. It will be played at the Imperial Ballroom at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort, the same place where the popular Battle 4 Atlantis is held.
Nov. 27: Stonehill, Fiserv Forum
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection: No. 341
Opponent nickname: Skyhawks
Opponent conference: Northeast
Head coach: Chris Kraus
Player to know: Chas Stinson, a 6-4 guard, scored 23 points at Rutgers last season and should be a focal point of the offense.
Notes: Kraus, a Stonehill graduate, was the 2022-23 NEC coach of the year.
Nov. 30: Western Carolina, Fiserv Forum
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection: No. 271
Opponent nickname: Catamounts
Opponent conference: Southern
Head coach: Tim Craft
Player to know: Junior guard Chevalier "Ice" Emery is an Appleton native who helped lead Neenah High School to the WIAA Division 1 state title in 2022.
Notes: Emery's college career has been eventful. He started at Merrimack and then went to Dodge City Community College in Kansas. He was going to come home to play for UW-Green Bay, but when Sundance Wicks left to coach Wyoming, Emery hit the NCAA transfer portal again.
Dec. 4: at Iowa State, Hilton Coliseum
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection: No. 3.
Opponent nickname: Cyclones
Opponent conference: Big 12
Head coach: T.J. Otzelberger
Player to know: Former Pewaukee High School standout Milan Momcilovic is an NBA prospect with elite shooting and a 6-8 frame.
Notes: This game is part of the Big East-Big 12 Battle series. Otzelberger is a Milwaukee native and he's kept up a long pipeline with talent from his home state. The Cyclones' 2025 recruiting class includes Milwaukee Academy of Science's Jamarion Batemon and Oshkosh North's Xzavion Mitchell.
Dec. 7: Wisconsin, Fiserv Forum
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection: No. 41.
Opponent nickname: Badgers
Opponent conference: Big Ten
Head coach: Greg Gard
Player to know: MU fans probably still have nightmares about Max Klesmit scoring 21 points in the first half against the Golden Eagles last season.
Notes: This always is a hotly anticipated game. MU's Smart is looking for his first win in the rivalry after dropping his first three matchups.
Dec. 14: Dayton, UD Arena
2024-25 BartTorvik.com preseason projection: No. 58.
Opponent nickname: Flyers
Opponent conference: Atlantic 10
Head coach: Anthony Grant
Player to know: MU is very familiar with feisty point guard Posh Alexander, who is using his final season of eligibility at Dayton after three at St. John's and one at Butler.
Notes: This is the start of a home-and-home series. The teams played frequently when they were both independents (MU leads series, 21-14), but they haven't met since 2008.
