Marquette needs new women's basketball coach with Megan Duffy headed to Virginia Tech
Marquette needs a new women's basketball coach.
After five seasons leading the Golden Eagles, Megan Duffy was hired by Virginia Tech on Wednesday.
"I am thrilled to welcome Coach Duffy and her husband Kevin to Virginia Tech," Hokies athletic director Whit Babcock said in a statement. "An accomplished player and coach, Megan has a relentless work ethic and a demonstrated ability to develop talent and build successful programs. "She is a proven winner and committed to continuing our women's basketball program's momentum."
Duffy went 110-46 at MU, including 64-30 in the Big East, but the Golden Eagles couldn't break through with a victory in the NCAA Tournament.
"The opportunity to continue the winning tradition with Hokie Nation and to be a part of the passionate, savvy Blacksburg community makes this a dream job for me," Duffy said in a statement. "The ACC is the best conference in the country with deep talent and outstanding leaders."
Megan Duffy was Big East coach of the year in 2019-20
Duffy was Big East coach of the year in her first season at MU after reaching the conference tournament championship game. The Golden Eagles were poised to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, but the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the season.
MU made the NCAA Tournament the next season but lost, interestingly enough, to Virginia Tech in the first round. The Golden Eagles reached the third round of the WNIT in 2022, and then suffered back-to-back NCAA Tournament first-round exits, last season to South Florida and this season to Ole Miss.
What does Marquette's roster look like?
Duffy's replacement at MU will need to rebuild the roster, with this season's starting lineup set to move on. Jordan King and Frannie Hottinger exhausted their fifth years of eligibility, Rose Nkumu announced on social media that she wouldn't seek a fifth season, and Liza Karlen and Kenzie Hare both entered the transfer portal in recent days.
The Golden Eagles still have some intriguing young players in 6-foot-3 freshman forward Skylar Forbes, and 6-1 guard Halle Vice, who battled injuries this season. MU signed a three-player recruiting class in the fall, including Waupun High School's Kayl Peterson.
