LSU football moves Sage Ryan again. Brian Kelly notes DB depth ahead of South Carolina game

BATON ROUGE — Sage Ryan has already gone through a position change once for LSU football this season.

Looks like the junior defensive back will be on the move again within the Tigers' secondary just two games into the 2024 season.

Ryan spent most of his LSU career at safety before being asked to line up at cornerback dating back to the preseason. Recent developments, the emergence of other players, have LSU coach Brian Kelly and defensive coordinator Blake Baker in favor of sliding Ryan back over to safety.

"I think that's where he can help us," Kelly said of Ryan. "Look, he's a very versatile player for us, but I think that's where he fits right now for us. We've focused in now with (senior Zy) Alexander playing at the level the way he has, I think it just makes sense for us to keep him at the safety position."

Alexander was eased into this season as he was coming off an ACL injury that he suffered last season during the Army game. With his limited snaps during fall camp as he worked his way back, Ryan was the perfect candidate to log reps during practice at corner as Kelly stated his versatility and understanding of football and Baker's new scheme.

JU'JUAN JOHNSON DEVELOPMENT Ju'Juan Johnson's role for LSU football at running back could expand. Here's why.

Against Nicholls, Alexander had three tackles and a pass breakup.

Freshman P.J. Woodland has also seen quality playing time in the Tigers' first two games, has done some solid things and still has the eyes of the coaches on him. Woodland is expected to continue to see the field for LSU.

Due to the emergence of guys, alongside with the rise and steady play of other starting corner Ashton Stamps, Kelly said he anticipates a routine rotation at cornerback in an effort to get players performing at a high level.

"What we have found is nobody is at a point where they can play 65, 70 snaps. We have to get our players playing at the highest level but not playing that many snaps. I think Zy can play 30 to 35 snaps but he's going to have to spelled as well," Kelly said. "I think you're going to see four corners playing, I think you're going to see four or five safeties playing.

"We're going to rely on the depth on those units to make certain that we're playing at the highest level. I think we'll be a better defensive backfield playing in that capacity."
