What Brian Kelly said LSU football could do at defensive tackle without Jacobian Guillory
BATON ROUGE — What will the interior of the defensive line look like for LSU football when it takes the field at Williams-Brice Stadium against South Carolina this coming Saturday afternoon?
Since the news broke Sunday of senior defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left foot during the win over Nicholls on Saturday night and will miss the remainder of the season, that's been the question circulating around the No. 17 Tigers (1-1) as they prep for the Gamecocks, who are coming off an SEC road win at Kentucky.
LSU football coach Brian Kelly told reporters during his weekly news conference Monday that the defense is losing its "stalwart. A big, physical point of attack guy. A technically sound, physical football player."
And like with any important player relative to their position and the entire unit, the plan isn't to just replace him in the lineup.
LSU plans to make some adjustments based on who can step up and play the position, as well as what would complement the other players at the other interior spot and defensive ends and linebackers behind them.

LSU MAILBAG QUESTIONS AFTER NICHOLLS WIN LSU football mailbag: Where's the ground game?
"Jacobian was a technically sound, physical football player. So you know what you're losing from that standpoint but we know what he wasn't as well. He wasn't a dynamic pass rusher and he'd be the first to tell you that," Kelly said. "But you're losing a very strong inside presence to your defense. You've got to look at who can make up for that.
"We've got some ideas about how we can do things with our front that can make up for his loss. You don't necessarily make up for what he did, you try to do some other things differently that can complement the guys that you have."
Sophomore and JUCO transfer Shone Washington spelled Guillory for most of the night against Nicholls and "played very, very well," Kelly said. The expectation is Washington continues in that role starting at South Carolina Saturday.
Other guys like freshman Ahmad Breaux and Division II transfer Jay'viar Suggs could also fill out the rotation. Kelly said LSU is only looking at about "15 to 20 reps" on the interior of the defensive line, so the plan won't be as extensive as it seems.
But a decision will have to made from a coaching perspective. Will a defensive end slide inside to provide more depth and bodies or will they activate a freshman?
"Shone Washington picked up most of those snaps on Saturday. But we have to make a decision: Do we (make) active (freshman) Dominick McKinley, do we get him moving a little bit more? Do we move somebody inside that's already a defensive end that can help us?" Kelly said. "There's maybe some guys that can move inside to give us some more snaps. We're talking about 15 to 20 more reps that are needed inside.
"Once Shone is able to do the things he did on Saturday, that helps us a lot in trying to find another 15 to 20 reps."
