LSU basketball loses rematch, falls flat on defensive end in road loss to Arkansas

LSU basketball dominated Arkansas last month in Baton Rouge, but Wednesday's rematch proved to be different, as the Tigers (16-14, 8-9 SEC) fell to the Razorbacks (15-15, 6-11), 94-83.

LSU fell behind by double digits in the first half, but a Tyrell Ward buzzer beater appeared to give the Tigers some momentum heading into the second, but they were never able to go on much of a run.

The LSU offense held its own — shooting a respectable 45% from the floor — but the defense couldn't contain the Razorbacks. Arkansas shot better than 60% from the floor in both halves. And when the defense did make stops, forcing 16 turnovers, the offense fell flat, getting just 10 points of of those.

Comeback barely gets going

LSU had mastered the comeback down the stretch of the season, erasing multiple double-digit second-half deficits to at least have a chance to tie. Unlike most of those comebacks, though, the Tigers' first large deficit on Wednesday was 12 points and they had nearly 19 minutes on the clock to come back.

And LSU did make something of a comeback initially, but never managed to close the gap to fewer than four points for the entire second half.

Baker can't repeat performance

Last time these two teams met, senior center Will Baker had arguably his best game in an LSU uniform, scoring 25 points on 81.8% shooting. Wednesday night was a different story.

Baker was held scoreless for the entire first half, and was benched for long stretches in favor of Jalen Reed and Hunter Dean. Baker managed to get on the board in the second with a free throw, and added his first made shot with less than 10 minutes to play, but finished with three points and two rebounds.

LSU slows Battle for a half

Arkansas guard Khalif Battle had been one of the top scorers in all of college basketball over his last three games, scoring at least 34 points in each one. But against LSU, the Tigers found a way to limit him, at least in the first half. Battle was limited to 10 points and 2-of-6 shooting in the first, but returned to his form in the second, scoring 19 on 5-of-8 shooting.
