LSU baseball loses lead late, falls to North Carolina in Chapel Hill Regional final
Errors in extra innings are going to have dire consequences.
LSU baseball freshman Jake Brown misjudged a hard-hit liner to deep right field off the bat of North Carolina's Johnny Castagnozzi that careened off Brown and the wall and Castagnozzi was able to easily get into second base in the top of the 10th inning.
Two batters later, Gage Jump couldn't overcome eight-hole hitter Alex Madera with a full-count as his single back up the middle scored the go-ahead run. LSU (43-23), with the top of its order up to bat, couldn't match as it lost 4-3 to the Tar Heels in 10 innings in the Chapel Hill Regional final at Boshamer Stadium on Monday night.
With their loss, the Tigers' season came to an end. UNC advanced to face West Virginia in the super regionals.

LSU baseball doesn't execute with it matters most
Gage Jump has been arguably LSU's best pitcher this season. With the team clinging to a 3-2 lead entering the top of the ninth, Jump was called upon for just his second relief appearance this season, the first since Opening Day more than three months ago.
UNC's Gavin Gallaher led off the ninth with a double. Two batters later, Colby Wilkerson's base hit tied the game that LSU led nearly all night long.
In the tenth, Jump couldn't finish off the inning, giving up the go-ahead run.
LSU didn't play clean defense during the Chapel Hill Regional, but up to that point in the game, the defense had been solid. When Paxton Kling entered the game in top of the eighth, Brown slid over from center to right field. In the biggest moment, the Tigers couldn't come through and the Tar Heels took full advantage.
LSU baseball's Jared Jones caps impressive Chapel Hill Regional run
LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson said during the game against North Carolina on Monday that Jones has taken his batting to "another level" during the regional.
Where Jones has been biggest for LSU has been in his patience. He drew nine walks throughout the Chapel Hill Regional, something that he got away from during the middle of the season.
During the SEC Tournament was when things started the turn the corner for Jones again at the plate as he carried a four-game hitting streak into the NCAA Tournament. He kept that momentum going to help the Tigers get past the Heels.
Reliever Will Hellmers puts together longest appearance of season against North Carolina
The plan for LSU was to use a plethora of pitchers with the regional crown hanging in the balance. Senior reliever Will Hellmers had other plans.
The right-hander stepped on the mound and delivered 5⅓ innings of crafty, scoreless work for his longest outing this season. Hellmers worked ahead and stayed ahead of most of the 20 batters he faced. He struck out four and at one point retired nine straight hitters.
Hellmers' appearance proved to be significant as North Carolina reliever Matthew Matthijs was dealing in his own right, throwing 4⅓ frames, giving up just one run off two hits as LSU's lineup couldn't time him up.
LSU baseball cleanup hitter Josh Pearson plays best ball when Tigers needed it most but falls short in biggest moment
LSU, which had won six consecutive win-or-go-home contests dating back to the College World Series last season, faced three elimination games between Sunday, when it played two games, and Monday for all the marbles of the Chapel Hill Regional.
Different players stepped up and delivered in pressure situations, and junior cleanup hitter Josh Pearson thrived with his team on the brink. In the three games, the calm and collected left-hander batted in seven runs, the team-high in that stretch.
Pearson, who had just one hit in the regional before Sunday, went 5-for-12 while crushing two home runs and three doubles, including one against UNC on Monday. How he hit with either LSU trailing or tied was monumental for his team.
