LSU baseball lands No. 2 seed in Chapel Hill Regional in NCAA Tournament

BATON ROUGE — The jinx of the reigning NCAA College World Series champion not making the NCAA Tournament field the following season has been snapped.

LSU baseball, who went on an absolute heater to end the regular season and through the SEC Baseball Tournament after a rocky start to conference play, played its way into the field of 64. LSU (40-21) landed the No. 2 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional at No. 4 overall national seed North Carolina (43-13). The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee unveiled the full bracket Monday during its Selection Show.

No. 3 Wofford (41-18), the Southern Conference Championship, and No. 4 Long Island (33-23) round out the teams. LSU will open up play at regionals against Wofford Friday (11 a.m. CT, ESPNU).

The Chapel Hill Regional is paired with the Tuscon Regional for the super regional round. That regional is topped by national No. 13 seed Arizona.

REQUIRED READING LSU baseball NCAA Tournament projections: Where Tigers stand after SEC Baseball Tournament

Before the Tigers won the national championship, the previous two champions, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, failed to make the tournament field after capturing the title. After LSU's rough start to SEC play, where it lost its first five league series, made it appear the squad was going to be the next victim to the jinx.

Led by star slugger Tommy White, and ace pitchers Gage Jump and Luke Holman, the Tigers mounted a rally down the stretch of the regular season and conference tournament. LSU won 18 of its last 24 games and slingshot its way to the SEC Tournament championship game where it ultimately lost to Tennessee 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.

But by that time the Tigers removed any doubt that it was an NCAA Tournament squad.

This season marks the 12th straight appearance for the Tigers in the NCAA Tournament. The last time LSU had to travel for the regional round, it lost in the regional championship game at the Hattiesburg Regional to Southern Miss in 2022.
