LSU baseball gets roughed up, drops SEC opener at Mississippi State

LSU baseball dropped its opening Southeastern Conference contest, falling 10-4 on the road at Mississippi State at Dudy Noble Field on Friday night.

The loss to the Bulldogs (14-5, 1-0) snapped a two-game winning streak for the No. 2 Tigers (16-3, 0-1) and a stretch in which the Tigers have now gone 11-2.

Coming into its first SEC series of the 2024 season, LSU's pitching staff had been setting the tone for the team as the offense has struggled of late, but the Bulldogs got the better of that matchup, tallying 16 hits and knocking around Tiger pitchers around en route to the big win.

LSU baseball pitcher Luke Holman gets roughed up for first time

Through four starts this season, LSU junior right-hander Luke Holman had given up just eight total hits in 24 innings pitched.

But at Dudy Noble Field, the Bulldogs roughed Holman up for 10 hits in 4⅔ inning pitched. State pushed across five runs, but only two of them were earned for Holman as LSU's defense committed a pair of errors that Mississippi State capitalized on.

Holman was served his first loss on the season as he was chased in the fifth inning.

Tommy White gives LSU early lead with home run

Mississippi State grabbed the early 1-0 lead off an Amani Larry RBI single in the second. But the Tigers responded in the next half-inning,

Josh Pearson and Tommy White each smashed home runs in the top of the third inning. Pearson's homer tied the game at 1-1 before a Mac Bingham single was immediately followed by White's homer to give the Tigers the two-run lead.

But that would the last time LSU would lead as Mississippi State reclaimed a 5-3 advantage in the fifth.

White and Pearson headlined a quiet night at the dish for the Tigers, who managed just six hits off State's arsenal of pitchers in starter Evan Siary, Nolan Stevens and Cam Schuelke.

Mississippi State's Hunter Hines homers twice

With as good as the Tigers' pitching staff has been through the first 18 games this season, hitting a single home run against the collective group has been a tall order.

Don't tell Mississippi State's Hunter Hines that. The Bulldogs' first baseman cranked two long balls, including a three-run jack that put the game on ice in the bottom of the eighth inning.
