LSU baseball drops series finale to No. 1 Texas A&M

BATON ROUGE — Leads were not safe between LSU baseball and No. 1 Texas A&M.

A&M lost leads in the first two games of the series as the Tigers rallied to take both to clinch the series victory over the top-ranked team by Saturday night.

LSU jumped out a 3-0 lead in the series finale Sunday afternoon by the third inning. The Aggies put on rally caps of their own, putting up a nine-spot in the fifth inning en route to winning 14-4 on Sunday to salvage a game this weekend at Alex Box Stadium.

"We played as good as we've played all season for 22 innings and we just ran out of bullets," LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson said Sunday. "I don't think we could've pitched better for 22 innings and the (fifth) inning got away from us. We didn't have much to go to. It is what it is."

The series win marked is the third straight for LSU (30-18, 9-15 SEC).

Texas A&M finally got the top of its order going

One of the ways the Tigers were able to keep the Aggies at bay when they got leads in the first two games were hampering the top of the order's ability to find a rhythm and limit damage that way. Gavin Grahovac, Braden Montgomery and others struggled to get anything going Friday and Saturday.

But on Sunday, the lid came off for Grahovac, who had the go-ahead three-run home run in the fifth and finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBIs.

In return, A&M was able to string hits and walks together in that fifth inning, the first time all series it was able to, and extended an insurmountable lead, bolstered by a two-run homer from Jackson Appel and a bases loaded walk from Travis Chestnut.

Missing time doesn't bother LSU catcher Brady Neal

Brady Neal has been out of the heavy rotation at catcher as he's battled a shoulder issue he aggravated during the Missouri series a couple of weekends ago.

Despite less reps and game time, LSU's sophomore catcher has not been hindered by that at the plate. Neal has hit a home run in four of his past five games, including a two-run blast for the game's first runs Sunday. He's 5-for-14 with six RBIs in his past five games.

Texas A&M's Braden Montgomery has forgettable series at LSU

Johnson talked during the series about LSU pitchers mixing their offerings to Braden Montgomery, changing his eye levels and it worked against arguably the best hitter in college baseball.

Montgomery came into the weekend hitting .365, leading Texas A&M and in the top five in the nation. After going 0-for-13 with just two walks across the three games, the junior switch hitter's average has dropped 27 points. It's the worst three-game stretch he's had this season.

LSU baseball climbs SEC standings with series win over Texas A&M

With the series win over the Aggies, the Tigers aren't sweating making the SEC Tournament field as much as they were a coupe of weeks ago.

LSU now sits 10th in the overall standings, just one game behind Alabama, who it'll face next weekend in another pivotal SEC series.

"We're in the fight," Johnson said of how LSU frames this series win over A&M. "That's all we can do right now. We've won three SEC series in a row. A lot of bubble teams, we have wins against. We have work to do. I'm really excited about the next two weeks."
