Race recap: Josef Newgarden wins IndyCar race at St. Petersburg

The IndyCar Series begins its 2024 season on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., a 1.8-mile, 14-turn course. Marcus Ericsson won last year's race, in which a dozen cars suffered damage, with a Lap 1 crash eliminating five.

Josef Newgarden wins IndyCar race at St. Petersburg

Pole-sitter Josef Newgarden comfortably wins the season opener by 8+ seconds over Pato O'Ward.

Newgarden's Penske teammates Scott McLaughlin and Will Power take 3rd and 4th, with Colton Herton finishing 5th.

Lap 90: Josef Newgarden leads, followed by Pato O'Ward, by 4.2 seconds. Scott McLaughlin 3rd.

Lap 80: Josef Newgarden leads, followed by Pato O'Ward, by 2.2 seconds. Scott McLaughlin 3rd.

Lap 73: Off the restart, Scott McLaughlin passes Colton Herta for 3rd, then Will Power gets Herta for 4th. Josef Newgarden and Pato O'Ward maintain 1-2. That's Team Penske in 1st, 3rd and 4th.

Lap 68: Linus Lundqvist backs into a tire barrier and his rear wing is broken. The leaders had pitted just before this and Josef Newgarden kept the lead.

Lap 60: Josef Newgarden leads, followed by Pato O'Ward and Felix Rosenqvist.

Lap 54: Marcus Ericsson has pitted and parked.

Lap 39 restart: Josef Newgarden leads, with Pato O'Ward 2nd and Felix Rosenqvist 3rd.

Lap 35: Sting Ray Robb heads off track with brake failure and is eliminated.

Lap 28: Most of the field pits during the caution, and Felix Rosenqvist wins the tight race off pit road. Christian Lundgaard, who did not pit, is the leader.

Lap 27: Marcus Armstrong hits a tire barrier. He appears to be uninjured.

Lap 20: Top 5 remain the same. Josef Newgarden's lead is 1.7 seconds.

Lap 12: Josef Newgarden leads by 1.3 seconds over Felix Rosenqvist. Colton Herta, Pato O'Ward and Marcus Ericsson round out the top 5.

Lap 1: Josef Newgarden leads a clean start. Felix Rosenqvist retains 2nd. Scott McLaughlin gained 3 spots to 6th.

How long is the IndyCar race?

It is scheduled for 100 laps and 180 miles.

Push-to-pass: Drivers are allowed 150 seconds, with a maximum of 15 seconds for each use. Tires: Six sets of primary tires and four sets of alternate tires are available for the weekend. (Rookie drivers are allowed one extra set of primary tires.)
