Lions' Dan Campbell: 'Stubborn' Frank Ragnow wants to play through pectoral injury

Frank Ragnow has played through a litany of injuries in his NFL career, and Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell said his Pro Bowl center is angling to play through one more.

Campbell confirmed in his weekly radio appearance Tuesday on WXYT-FM (97.1) that Ragnow suffered a pectoral injury in last week's 20-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

The Lions still are evaluating the injury, Campbell said, and trying to determine the best course of action for Ragnow and the team.

"Look, first of all Frank is stubborn," Campbell said. "Hard-headed Frank. And he’s tough, he’s stubborn, so he wants to go. And he always wants to go, but this is something that we’re still talking about right now. I’m not entirely sure what we’re going to do with him."

Ragnow played all 68 offensive snaps against the Cardinals and had a key hand in the team's season-best 187-yard rushing day.

Campbell said Ragnow played through the injury, which NFL Network reported as a partially torn pectoral muscle, for part of the game. Last year, Ragnow played 15 of 17 games in the regular season and all three playoff games despite battling ankle, knee and toe injuries much of the year.

"A lot of it is where’s he going to feel by middle or end of the week," Campbell said. "But he does have something in there and he did play through some of this last week. And so we’ll do what’s best for him and what’s best for us in the moment, ultimately. But you know how I feel about Frank, we all do. Appreciate the heck out of him. He’s tough, man."

Birkett: Detroit Lions defense went from one of NFL's worst to dynamite through 3 games in 2024

The Lions (2-1) will be shorthanded defensively for this week's Monday night game against the Seattle Seahawks. Marcus Davenport is likely out for the season with a torn triceps, and linebacker Derrick Barnes will miss "significant" time with a knee injury.

Campbell said Josh Paschal will replace Davenport as the Lions' big defensive end opposite Aidan Hutchinson, though Levi Onwuzurike and others also will see time at the position. Campbell indicated the Lions could turn to their practice squad for reinforcements, where veteran Pat O'Connor has the most experience at defensive end.

"Davenport was playing at a high level," Campbell said. "It hurts. It does, it hurts losing him. He’s been a force in there but we also, that’s why you have the depth that we have and the players that we’ve acquired. Brad (Holmes has) done a hell of a job and we’ve always identified that depth is important and you got to have it. So we have guys that we know are going to step up and do a hell of a job for us, they’re ready for it. and everybody in this building knows that you are one play away and it’s your chance. It’s your opportunity to help your team and showcase what you got."
