Lexi Missimo sets Texas soccer record for career goals; Longhorns ready for Arkansas

Senior midfielder Lexi Missimo set a new record for career goals in Texas soccer’s 3-1 win Sunday over LSU. In the process, she helped set up a massive SEC showdown with visiting Arkansas at 6 p.m. Friday.

Missimo broke the record she shared with friend and teammate Trinity Byars in the 56th minute, when she beat LSU goalie Audur Scheving on a one-on-one breakaway for her 53rd career goal. The goal was Missimo’s ninth on the season — tied for the second-most scored in a single season during her collegiate career — and moved her closer to the 60-goal, 60-assist club. She’ll enter the match against Arkansas with 53 career goals and 59 career assists, which is also a program record.

“I’m just doing my job for the team, really,” Missimo said. “My job is to score goals and create assists, so I’m just doing my job. I’ve been in an assisting era over the last few matches, but now I’m trying to get back into the scoring era of my game. I’m just glad I can do both for this team, though. If it’s an assist or scoring a goal, I’m just glad we were able to get the win, while playing my part on the team.”

Texas coach Angela Kelly likes the way her team is playing, especially since the Longhorns will have to play the rest of the season without Byars and center back EmJ Cox, who have both suffered season-ending injuries. The Longhorns (11-2-2, 4-2-1 SEC) now have 12 points in their last four matches and currently sit in fourth place in the conference race with 13 points. Arkansas (11-1-1, 6-1-0) is tied with Mississippi State atop the standings with 18 points.

“Oh, there was a lot of resilience out there today,” Kelly said after the win over LSU. “As I mentioned to the team after the match, it’s all about grind, gritting and resiliency, those would be the three words. Through adversity, we’ve had to find those characteristics within ourselves. Every great team has all of those qualities, but we’ve had to have them come to the forefront now. I’m really proud of them.”
