Texas soccer player Lexi Missimo ties school record for goals in win over Oklahoma
Texas soccer player Lexi Missimo reached another milestone in the Longhorns' 1-0 victory over Oklahoma on Thursday at Myers Stadium.
During the 17th minute, Missimo headed home the lone goal of the match on a pass from Amalia Villarreal for her 52nd career goal. The center midfielder is now tied for the most goals in school history with teammate Trinity Byars, who suffered a season-ending knee injury early in the year.
Both Missimio and Byars are fifth-year seniors.
Missimo already holds the program record for career points (163) and assists (59), and she'll get another chance to break the tie for goals with Byars on Sunday at LSU.
“Well, my job as the 10 is to get assists and goals, and I was just doing my job tonight," said Missimo, who had five shots against the Sooners. "I couldn’t have done it without my teammates around me, though.”
Texas coach Angela Kelly said Missimo continues to build on her game even while drawing enhanced attention from opponents without Byars up top.
"(Lexi) has been double- and triple-teamed her whole career, and she still finds the space to get shots off," Kelly said. "Like tonight, she had five shots, and four of them were on goal. She’s such an exceptional talent, and we are so incredibly fortunate that she came to Texas.”
Missimio wasn't the only Longhorn to etch her name in the program's record books. Fifth-year defender Lauren Lapomarda became the first player in program history to appear in 92 career matches, which broke a tie with Emily Anderson (2006-09), Kasey Moore (2005-08) and Amy Burlingham (2003-06).
Texas (10-2-2, 3-2-1 SEC) has dropped out of the national poll after recent conference losses to Florida and Mississippi State.
