The latest from Georgia football coach Kirby Smart on injuries to Jordan Hall, Jared Wilson

Georgia football’s preseason camp will hit a new phase with fall semester classes at the university beginning on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs haven’t flipped their focus all the way yet on Clemson, the top 15 matchup that looms two weeks from Saturday on Aug. 31.

Players banged up and limited or out of practice still have time to be ready for that season opener.

So where do the Bulldogs stand on the injury front?

There are two notable injuries that coach Kirby Smart updated Tuesday, his first time meeting with reporters since practices began on Aug. 1.

Sophomore defensive tackle Jordan Hall, who already was sidelined after undergoing surgery for a tibia stress fracture, sustained the same injury on the other leg, Smart said. He had just started to run when he had a setback.

"We had to fix the other one," Smart said. "He’s on a good timeline. It’s not a long-term deal. Now he actually know s what to expect because he's had it done to the left and the right. He had the other one fixed. He’s going to be back. We don’t know the exact timeline for that.”

The 6-foot-4, 320-pound former four-star prospect from Jacksonville native had 10 tackles and six quarterback pressures last season.

Georgia doesn’t have the type of elite talent on the line it had during its national championship run, but it has experienced players in Nazir Stackhouse and Warren Brinson (who has dealt with an Achilles’ injury) and young talent in Christen Miller, Gabe Harris and Jahmal Jarrett and a player who’s flashed in defensive end Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins.

Meanwhile, Smart updated the status of projected starting center Jared Wilson, the athletic 6-foot-3, 310-pound redshirt junior heir apparent for three-year starter Sedrick Van Pran-Granger now with the Bills.

Wilson has been sidelined by Achilles tendonitis, Smart said.

"Jared is doing well," Smart said. "He's worked on the side. He's been able to push. He was able to do some things yesterday. He continues to ramp up his exposure and ramp up his reps."

Senior Tate Ratledge, who has started 28 games at right guard, has stepped in for Wilson at center in practice. He worked there some in the spring and continued his prep in the summer.

“Not treating it like I’m still at guard has been the biggest change,” Ratledge said on the first day of practices. “I’m definitely getting a lot more comfortable at that position and stepping into it.”

In another injury note, freshman inside linebacker Kris Jones, a four-star prospect, sustained an apparent left leg injury, according to a photo he posted on his Instagram account. Smart said outside linebacker Chaz Chambliss is dealing with a hamstring injury and has seen limited practice reps.
