Kyrie Irving is going to hit the market with a new perspective. The soon-to-be free agent parted ways with his longtime agent Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Irving has dropped Jeff Wechsler in favor of ROC Nation Sports, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The timing of the move is curious. Early Wednesday, Irving did not opt in to a $21 million deal with the Celtics, instead opting to hit the free-agent market.

Presumably, Irving’s previous agent had been working on gauging the market and getting his client a huge deal when free agency begins June 30. Irving may not have been happy with the way those conversations with his agent were going. Either that, or he decided it was time to make a change weeks before a huge payday.

Given Jay-Z’s previous ties to the Brooklyn Nets — he once owned a share of the team — some have speculated Irving signing with Jay-Z’s agency could mean the Nets are now the favorite to sign Irving.

For now, that’s just speculation. Only Irving knows why he left he longtime agent just weeks before a major payday. Given Irving’s Instagram commentary, hearing him discuss the situation should at least be interesting.
