Kirby Smart on Georgia football player taking part in Ole Miss celebration: 'What an idiot'
Georgia football had to endure Ole Miss fans storming the field to celebrate their 28-10 upset win over the Bulldogs Saturday in Oxford.
A strange sight made the rounds on social media Monday of a player in a Bulldog uniform joining in on the festivities.
Safety Jake Pope, in his first season with Georgia after transferring from Alabama, was captured on video with a woman wearing a No. 56 jersey of Ole Miss offensive lineman Reece McIntyre who like Pope played at Buford High. Pope is seen smiling and jumping up and down with her.
“What an idiot,” coach Kirby Smart said Monday. “I mean, just stupid I didn’t see it until today. He’s embarrassed about it. He’s upset about it. That’s obviously a childhood friend of his. He grew up and played with him there at Buford and he knows him. Hadn’t seen him in forever. Not really smart. But to be honest with you, I don’t have time to waste energy on that. You know what I’m saying? My focus is on Tennessee.”

Pope has played in three games this season in a reserve role but did not see action against Ole Miss.
Pope posted a statement Monday afternoon to his Instagram stories.
"I wanted to address the videos that have been put out after the ole miss game," Pope said. "First and foremost I want to say sorry for the way it was taken out of perspective and has caused distractions/commotion for my teammates and coaches. This is not representative of who I am in any way, in no way shape or form would I ever celebrate a loss in this program and anyone who know me well knows that. My long time family friends had come up to me unexpectedly after the game and I was trying to get off the field to safety and were extremely excited to see me after the game. I was also surprised to see them as well and that's why you saw the reaction that I gave via the video."
Pope apologized to his teammates, coaches and fans.
"I am Georgia through thick and thin," he said, "and have never loved a group of guys more than the guys I got to battle with day in and day out."
