Khalil Shakir injury update: Bills inactives now listed for Jets game
Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills passing game will face its toughest test of the season Monday night when they take on the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, and they may have to do so without their most productive wide receiver, Khalil Shakir.
Will Khalil Shakir play against the Jets?
UPDATE: Shakir is not listed as inactive for Jets game, so he will play.
Sean McDermott announced Saturday that Shakir will be listed as questionable. He has shown slight improvement through the week, but he will most likely be a game-time decision.
If he can't play, that will create problems for a team that has gotten very little production from the other four receivers who have played - Curtis Samuel, Keon Coleman, Mack Hollins and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
The Jets rank second in the NFL in passing yards allowed at 136.6 per game, their sack percentage of 11.4% is also second best, and their net yards per pass attempt allowed of 4.3 is No. 1, due in large part to arguably the best outside cornerback duo in the NFL in Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed.
How was Khalil Shakir injured?
Shakir injured his right ankle while being tackled after making a catch against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4. He had his right ankle taped by athletic trainers and returned to the game, leading the Bills with four catches for 62 yards. Shakir was spotted wearing a walking boot after the game. Shakir did not play in Week 5.
Who is Khalil Shakir's backup?
Samuel has been limited in practice most of the week as he continues to battle turf toe, an injury that has affected his performance all season. However, he is expected to play and he did have a full practice Saturday. The Bills will also need Coleman, who scored a touchdown in Houston, to step into the void left by Shakir's absence, and the same goes for Valdes-Scantling who has just two catches on eight targets for 26 yards in his first five games with the Bills.
