LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball enjoyed another opportunity to play a preseason exhibition game Tuesday, at home against Washburn, and won 84-53.
The Jayhawks came in off of a recent exhibition defeat at Arkansas. Following Late Night in the Phog earlier this month, this Washburn matchup was the first opportunity for KU fans to see their team go up against another inside a newly renovated Allen Fieldhouse. Head coach Bill Self's squad again wasn't at full strength, but did get one of the players who missed the Razorbacks exhibition back tonight.
Kansas is a Division I program. Washburn is a Division II program. And the Ichabods were coached by a former Jayhawks player, Brett Ballard, who’s also spent time in the past on Self’s coaching staff at KU.

UPDATE: 8:49 p.m. (CT): Kansas leads 84-46 with 3:13 left in 2nd half
After not shooting many free throws against Arkansas, Kansas has done a much better job against Washburn of getting to the free-throw line. So far, the Jayhawks are 9-for-14 on free throws. Sure, they'd want the overall percentage to be better, but it's a step in the right direction.
UPDATE: 8:29 p.m. (CT): Kansas leads 70-29 with 11:06 left in 2nd half
An interesting statistic at this point in the game, is the fact that Kansas has turned the ball over 11 times and Washburn has turned it over 13. The two sides aren't far off in that respect. However, the Jayhawks have scored 16 points off of turnovers while the visitors have scored just four — further allowing Kansas to extend its significant lead here at home.
UPDATE: 8:17 p.m. (CT): Kansas leads 53-26 with 15:51 left in 2nd half
Rylan Griffen has continued to excel in the second half, and is now up to 12 points. He's hit four of the five 3s he's attempted. Time and again he's showcasing why, as long as he stays healthy, people have been talking about him as such a pivotal piece of this Kansas squad that has such high aspirations.
UPDATE: 7:49 p.m. (CT): HALFTIME: Kansas 38, Washburn 22

UPDATE: 7:38 p.m. (CT): Kansas basketball leads 33-17 with 2:55 left in 1st half
Considering Hunter Dickinson is unavailable due to injury, it should come as no surprise Kansas just spent some time going with a lineup that had KJ Adams Jr. as the Jayhawks' 5-man. Adams has shown an ability to excel a lot in that role in the past. He played well in these recent minutes, and so far tonight is up to four points, four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal.
UPDATE: 7:27 p.m. (CT): Kansas basketball leads 29-14 with 7:20 left in 1st half
Kansas has relied on its ability to hit 3s a lot so far tonight, and the effort is working so far. The Jayhawks are 7-for-13 from behind the arc so far, on a night they're 11-for-18 from the field. Neither Kansas nor Washburn has attempted a free throw yet.
UPDATE: 7:18 p.m. (CT): Kansas basketball leads 21-7 with 11:51 left in 1st half
After missing the Arkansas exhibition due to injury, Rylan Griffen was expected to play tonight against Washburn for Kansas. Recently, he checked into the game and hit a 3-pointer on his first shot in the game. So, that's a positive sign for his status as the regular season nears because he's someone the Jayhawks will likely rely upon a lot as the campaign unfolds.
UPDATE: 7:11 p.m. (CT): Kansas basketball leads 11-2 with 15:08 left in 1st half
There's a lot to like from David Coit early for the Jayhawks. Not only has he been confident with his shot on the offensive end, and gone 2-for-3 from behind the arc to reach six points, but he's bringing the energy on the defensive end as well. Coit, who started the matchup, is making the most of this opportunity early.
Flory Bidunga has also been aggressive on the defensive end for Kansas. He's got a pair of early blocks. That rim protection will serve the Jayhawks well this season.

How did Kansas basketball perform last season?
Kansas is coming off a 23-11 season in which it reached the round of 32 of the NCAA tournament before being eliminated. The Jayhawks, especially late in the campaign, had to navigate injury issues that further brought attention to the reality that they just didn’t have enough depth. The coaching staff hit the transfer portal hard to address those concerns, and expectations are high again this season.
How did Washburn basketball perform last season?
Washburn is coming off of a 19-11 season. The season ended with a loss in the semifinals of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association tournament. That was Ballard’s seventh season at the helm, and he is now entering his eighth.
