Will Johnson injury update: Michigan CB reportedly hurts toe vs. Illinois

Will Johnson of the Michigan Wolverines reacts after a missed field goal by Washington Huskies at Husky Stadium, October 5, 2024 in Seattle, Washington.

Michigan football has suffered another big injury setback.

All-American cornerback Will Johnson suffered a left toe injury Saturday in the first half against Illinois (live updates), according to the CBS broadcast. Johnson came out on Michigan's first defensive possession and did not return to the game, a 21-7 Michigan loss.

"At the end of the first quarter, he came off the field, went straight into the injury tent," CBS sideline reporter Jenny Dell said. "They changed out his shoes, his orthotics guys, keep an eye on that left ankle when he does go back in."

Dell to open the third quarter estimated Johnson was questionable to return for the second half, but he did not have his helmet on.

Johnson missed one game this season against Minnesota and left the USC game early with a shoulder injury. He is a key cog to Michigan's disruptive defense with lockdown coverage and has two interceptions, both returned for touchdowns, in five games. He is a projected top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Michigan already was without left tackle Myles Hinton, defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny and defensive back Ja’Den McBurrows as three key players among a dozen Wolverines who were listed as out or questionable pregame coming off a bye week.

We'll monitor Johnson's status over the next week as Michigan (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) prepares to play in-state rival Michigan State on Saturday night in Ann Arbor.
