Michigan vs. Michigan State football kickoff time, TV channel announced

The annual clash between Michigan football and Michigan State football is one of a dozen traditional rivalry games protected by the Big Ten Conference in the newly expanded league, and we now know exactly when the 2024 iteration will take place.

The Big Ten announced Monday the No. 22 Wolverines (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) will host the Spartans (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network in Week 9. Michigan, which lost the last time it took the field in Week 6, is coming off a bye this week and scheduled to visit No. 21 Illinois on Saturday.

MSU, also coming off a bye, on Saturday will host Iowa, which has lost twice, both to teams ranked in the top 12 currently in Iowa State and Ohio State.

Michigan Wolverines' Devin Gil (8) and Mike Sainristil (19) carry the Paul Bunyan trophy off the field after the 44-10 win against the Michigan State Spartans, Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

The last time these teams met, Michigan absolutely dismantled Michigan State, marching up to East Lansing and winning 49-0; it was the largest shutout in the rivalry in more than 50 years. The wipeout came just a handful of days after news first broke of an alleged illegal sign-stealing scheme by Michigan, which turned out to steal the spotlight much of the rest of the season.

The year before, in 2022, U-M beat MSU 29-7 at the Big House, which was soon overshadowed by a kerfuffle in the Lloyd Carr tunnel, when handfuls of Michigan State athletes got into separate fights with individual Michigan players. Eight MSU players were suspended, and seven players were charged with misdemeanor offenses.

The late start at U-M will be MSU's fifth straight night game and sixth this season. The Spartans will play a seventh against Purdue (8 p.m. Nov. 22) and have three other kickoff times that have yet to be announced.

"Night games are what they are," MSU coach Jonathan Smith said earlier Monday in East Lansing. "We don't control the kickoff times, so you gotta approach it with knowing when the kickoff is. It's really about the back end of the game, right? So you kick off late, you finish late. And so the turnaround time, the recovery time, you try to emphasize that. You do a really nice job on Sunday. It makes a difference whether you're kicking at noon or kicking at 7:30 about really the next day.

"We don't control it. You'd love to have a little bit of a mix, but we're going to line up and play anytime that they let us."
