John Daly allowed to ride in cart at PGA Championship next week
Thanks to an injured knee, John Daly will be cruising around Bethpage Black next week.
The PGA of America has approved Daly’s request to use a golf cart at the PGA Championship next week, according to the Associated Press. Daly will be the first player to ride in a cart at a major tournament since Casey Martin did, who rode in the U.S. Open in both 1998 and 2012.
Daly applied for the cart through the PGA of America — which runs the PGA Championship — for osteoarthritis in his right knee, something he said prevents him from walking a full round, per the report. The 53-year-old currently plays on the PGA Tour Champions, which allows its senior players to ride in carts while competing.
"I hope I don't get a lot of grief from the fans," Daly told the Associated Press. "My knee is screwed. I had the meniscus cut out. I have osteoarthritis so bad ... I can walk up a hill, I just can't walk down one."
Daly has won five times on the PGA Tour, most notably at the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 British Open. He has won once on the PGA Tour Champions, winning the 2017 Insperity Invitational. Daly played at that same event last week, and finished in a tie for 27th.
Bethpage Black will host the PGA Championship in New York for the first time next week starting on Thursday. While the tournament will boast the biggest names in golf, it also marks the first time Tiger Woods will compete since his historic win at the Masters last month.
