Jim Harbaugh turns Ohio State 'third base' slight into Los Angeles Chargers rallying cry

While it's talking season for both Ohio State and Michigan football at Big Ten Media Days in Indianapolis, Jim Harbaugh seems to be getting back into the conversation from the NFL level.

As his first training camp with the Los Angeles Chargers begins, Harbaugh, the team's new head coach, narrated a video posted to the Chargers' account on X, formerly known as Twitter, introducing fans to the team and to its locker room, "your football home."

But in it, Harbaugh used language Ohio State fans should recognize.

"We want to compliment all who have earned the opportunity to get here and recognize the journey traveled," Harbaugh said. "To now be playing at the highest level of football. None here were born on third base, but rather had to work their way to first, then second, then third."

Harbaugh's soliloquy echoed a press conference he gave in March where he said "everybody in that organization, nobody was born on third base."

And after predicting that "those who produce will stay," and that "those who stay will be champions," Harbaugh continued the third base analogy.

"A piece of advice, if I may? Treat others how you would want to be treated," Harbaugh said. "Any respect that you give will be returned and then some. We're all now on third base together, poised to bring it home."

In November 2021, Harbaugh remarked that some people are "standing on third base, think they hit a triple," a comment he later confirmed as a "counter punch" to Ohio State coach Ryan Day's reported comment that Ohio State would "hang 100" on the Wolverines in 2020.

Last November, Harbaugh deflected an answer to a question about his level of respect for Day and Ohio State.

"It's all about our preparation for Ohio," Harbaugh said. "The days, the minutes, the hours, everything leading up to this game, that's where our focus is: preparing ourselves and planning. We're going to practice then execute. Anything else is irrelevant when it comes to this big game week."

More on Jim Harbaugh: Could Jim Harbaugh's first Chargers NFL draft pick be Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr.?

Harbaugh, who was Michigan's football coach from 2015-23, led the Wolverines to two wins in seven meetings against Ohio State.

Harbaugh was suspended for the final three games of the Big Ten season after Michigan was "found in violation of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy for conducting an impermissible, in-person scouting operation over multiple years, resulting in an unfair competitive advantage that compromised the integrity of competition." Instead, Sherrone Moore led Michigan to a win against Ohio State in 2023.

Ohio State has not beaten Michigan since 2019.

Heading into the 2024 season the Chargers have two former Ohio State players on its preseason roster in Joey Bosa and J.K. Dobbins. The Chargers also have wide receiver Praise Olatoke, who played club football at OSU.

The Chargers have four Michigan football alums: linebacker Junior Colson, defensive lineman Christopher Hinton, wide receiver Cornelius Johnson and tight end/fullback Ben Mason.
