Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh gives 'no comment' on third base statement toward Ohio State

After Michigan football beat Ohio State in Ann Arbor to end the 2021 regular season, coach Jim Harbaugh called for the Wolverines to "move on with humble hearts" and "take the high road."

"There's definitely stuff people said that spurred us on even more," Harbaugh said.

And then the Michigan coach said something that spurred Ohio State on.

"Sometimes people are standing on third base, think they hit a triple, but they didn't," Harbaugh said, a comment that seemed to target Ohio State coach Ryan Day about taking over the program from Urban Meyer.

When Harbaugh was asked to elaborate about that postgame quote at Big Ten media days Tuesday, the Michigan coach would not.

"I have no comment about that at this time," Harbaugh said.

What does Jim Harbaugh say about his relationship with Ryan Day?

The Michigan coach described his relationship with Day as "professional," saying the pair was "cordial" at the 2021 Heisman Trophy ceremony where both Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud and Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson were both finalists.

In August 2020, it was reported that Day told his team he wanted to "hang 100" on Michigan after getting into a disagreement with Harbaugh on a teleconference with other Big Ten coaches, something Day declined comment on when asked about later.

Day took over the Ohio State program from Meyer, who won each of his four matchups against Harbaugh and won all seven games against Michigan.

"When we play each other, he's doing everything he can to have his team win," Harbaugh said Tuesday. "I'm doing everything I had to have my team win. Competitive."

Day will speak at Big Ten media days from 12:30-12:45 p.m. before his hour-long podium session starting at 3:30 p.m.
