Who is Jaylin Lucas? What to know about Florida State football running back who is out for the season

Florida State football is taking another blow in what has already been a rough start to the 2024 college football season.

Seminoles coach Mike Norvell announced on Monday during his weekly press conference to discuss the upcoming game against Memphis that running back/wide receiver Jaylin Lucas is out for the remainder of the season after sustaining an injury against Boston College on Monday, Sept. 2.

"Do have some unfortunate news. Jaylin Lucas will be out for the year, sustained injury there in our last game," Norvell said at his Monday press conference. "Really disappointed for the young man, very talented player, explosive athlete for us. But unfortunately, he has an injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season."

Early on, Lucas was one of the few bright spots on a struggling FSU offense. The team has just 34 points through two games and is off to a 0-2 start despite coming off an undefeated regular season in 2023 and a preseason ranking of No. 10 in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

Here's what you need to know about Lucas, who is in his first year with the Seminoles:

Who is Jaylin Lucas?

Lucas is the younger brother of FSU receiver Ja'Khi Douglas, who leads the team with eight receptions and 121 yards through two games. Lucas transferred to FSU this offseason after beginning his collegiate career at Indiana. Lucas is listed as a junior on the Florida State football roster, meaning he had two years of eligibility remaining entering the season. Freshman Micahi Danzy is expected to have a more prominent role on the team moving forward.

As Norvell pointed out, Lucas has not used his redshirt season yet so that he could do that this season.

"He does have a redshirt available, so he does have a couple of years eligibility left with that," Norvell said. "But just our thoughts are with him as he's jumping into the rehab part of recovery with the injury. I know he's going to do a great job of being able to continue to help the guys that are there on the field and obviously working through his process, you'll hear moving forward. Still, very excited about what his future is going to be as a Seminole, but it is unfortunate we're going to lose him for the rest of the season."

Lucas was ranked 946th overall in the 2022 recruiting class, per 247 Sports Composite rankings. He was ranked the 67th athlete and 51st best player in Louisiana. Before attending Edna Karr High in New Orleans as a senior, he played at Houma High in Terrebonne, Louisiana.

As a transfer, Lucas was rated as the 267th-ranked player in the portal this past offseason and the 28th-ranked running back. He picked FSU over offers from Louisville, Oklahoma State, Penn State, and Mississippi State.
