Ja'Marr Chase: Bengals are team to beat in the AFC, need to act like it

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase gave a strong endorsement of his team a few days before a massive Week 2 contest against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After starting the season with an underwhelming loss to the New England Patriots, Chase isn’t overreacting but understands the urgency behind this game.

“We are the team to beat in the AFC and we know it and we got to act like it and play like it, too,” Chase said.

After seeing limited snaps in Week 1, Chase said he expects to get his full workload on Sunday afternoon.

The Bengals will rely heavily on the connection between quarterback Joe Burrow and Chase to shine through in a game like this. For the Bengals to go on the road and take down a team as talented as Kansas City is, they’ll need Burrow and Chase’s best efforts.

Chase gave praise to Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo saying he’s really good at using his personnel. Kansas City traded defensive back L’Jarius Sneed to Tennessee this offseason and that means the Sneed versus Chase battle will be on hold until the end of the season when the Bengals play the Titans.

Without Sneed, former first-round pick Trent McDuffie is their mainstay at cornerback now with Sneed gone. McDuffie is one of the better young corners in the NFL.

Cincinnati must be ready to adjust to whatever Spagnuolo throws at them on offense. Chase will see plenty of attention from the Chiefs’ secondary, so the rest of Bengals’ wide receiver group must step up.

And that’s exactly what Chase stressed to his teammates this week. Tee Higgins is unlikely to play on Sunday as he’s dealing with a hamstring injury and has yet to practice this week. This means that Andrei Iosivas, Charlie Jones, Mike Gesicki and Trenton Irwin need to step up when their number is called.

“We couldn’t ask for a better chance to get a win right here,” Chase said. "We couldn’t ask for a better chance for the receivers to go crazy, for the quarterback to crazy and for the whole offense to be ourselves again.”
