IU basketball transfer portal additions continue with Stanford guard Kanaan Carlyle
BLOOMINGTON – IU landed another potential impact backcourt transfer Saturday, when Stanford transfer guard Kanaan Carlyle announced his commitment to the Hoosiers.
An Atlanta-area native, Carlyle joins Washington State’s Myles Rice in bolstering the Hoosiers’ guard rotation with players from the Georgia capital. Carlyle averaged 11.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season in Palo Alto, his work earning him honorable-mention All-Pac-12 freshman team honors.

He shot a clean 32-of-100 from behind the 3-point line last season, and made 77.6% of his free throws. Carlyle was relatively effective in reaching the stripe as well — he finished his freshman season seventh in the Pac-12 in league play in fouls drawn per 40 minutes. He also posted a 20.9% assist rate in conference games, albeit against a 22% turnover rate in the same sample.
A one-time four-star prospect who played at Milton High School before spending time with Overtime Elite, Carlyle should plug straight into Mike Woodson’s backcourt rotation, perhaps even challenging for starter’s minutes. With as many as three years of eligibility left, he gives the Hoosiers immediate impact and long-term viability both.
