Miami Dolphins instant report card: Offense bad, defense not much better in loss to Bills
MIAMI GARDENS — Breaking down the Miami Dolphins' 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night:
Quarterbacks
Tua Tagovailoa's night ended in the third quarter because of a concussion. But it was miserable even before then. His lack of a dependable WR3 showed. He threw two interceptions amid what appeared to be miscommunication in what was expected of his receivers and finished with three interceptions total including a pick-6.
Grade: D-minus
Running backs
De'Von Achane, who was questionable, played and had a good night, but after falling behind by so many points, there was only so much the backs could do. Also, Jeff Wilson left early with an oblique injury.
Grade: B
Receivers / tight ends
Second-year receiver Grant DuBose, who hasn't had much work with Tagovailoa, wasn't ready for a pass on the first series. Tagovailoa's pass was intercepted, leading to Buffalo's first score. Then, Robbie Chosen and Tagovailoa weren't on the same page, setting up a second INT. Tyreek Hill had a quiet night.

NOW WHAT? Who is Skylar Thompson, Dolphins backup QB for Tua Tagovailoa?
Offensive line
Liam Eichenberg was called for a potentially damaging false start in the red zone, although the Dolphins overcame it for a TD. Terron Armstead was called for holding and later left with a shoulder injury. Robert Jones gave up a sack to Ed Oliver on a fourth-and-2 play. He soon left with a shoulder injury and was replaced by Lester Cotton. The Bills pressured the reserves on the left side of the line and it paid off when Tagovailoa was under heat when he threw up a pick-6 while trying to throw it away. GM Chris Grier says he's not as concerned about the OL as the rest of us. Maybe he should be.
Grade: D
Defensive line
Zach Sieler blew up a third-and-2 run in the red zone early. Otherwise, an uneventful evening.
Grade: C-minus
Linebackers
David Long got tripped up by a teammate on Buffalo's early TD when James Cook went in motion. He also left a gap that Cook exploited on his 49-yard TD run. Jordyn Brooks saved a TD with good pass defense in the end zone against Curtis Samuel.
Grade: C-minus
Defensive backs
Jordan Poyer, who spent seven seasons with the Bills, was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty for a helmet-to-helmet hit on a receiver. Jalen Ramsey was uncharacteristically beaten by running back Ty Johnson on a 33-yard pass to the 1-yard line to set up a touchdown.
Grade: D
Special teams
Uneventful night overall. Anthony Walker Jr. was called for illegal formation on a kickoff for the second consecutive game.
Grade: C
Coaching
After the Bills went up 24-7, the Dolphins got the ball with 3:36 left and all three timeouts. It should have been more than enough time to run their offense the way they please. But they managed to sleepwalk down the field, which cost them at least one extra shot in the end zone in the long run. Instead, they were forced to settle for a field goal despite driving to the Bills’ 16-yard line. The bigger problem, though, is how listless the team looked all night.
