Insider expects Steve Kerr to remain with Warriors beyond this season
Steve Kerr is in the final year of his current contract. The veteran coach has enjoyed significant success with the Golden State Warriors, leading them to four championships during his tenure with the team. However, there have been questions regarding whether Joe Lacob and Mike Dunleavy Jr. would retain Kerr moving forward.
According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, who was speaking to Michael Scotto on “The HoopsHype Podcast,” Kerr retains admirers within the franchise. As such, he will likely agree to a new deal with the Warriors and continue in his role as head coach for the foreseeable future.
“From all I gather, especially this last week to 10 days after the assistant coach passing away has reinforced what he means to them,” Slater said. “It’s so much more than an X’s and O’s level. The way he’s guided them through this, I still sense a desire from the leadership of the organization to keep Steve in the fold.”
Kerr has come under increasing pressure this season. The Warriors have struggled to find consistency on the court and look to be searching for an identity. However, given his previous success and his importance to the franchise over the past decade, he will likely be afforded time to get things back on track.
Golden State also have a decision to make regarding their current roster construction. Currently, they are straddling two timelines. If they want Kerr to deliver another championship, they may need to pick a lane in the coming months.
