The Indianapolis Colts begin the 2024 season with a home matchup against the Denver Broncos today.

Quarterback Anthony Richardson will see the field for the first time since being injured in Week 5 of the 2023 campaign. Wide receiver Alec Pierce made some big plays in practice last week. Will that transfer over to the field against the Broncos?

Another question for the Colts is which pass catcher will step up for the injured Josh Downs? Downs, a second-year receiver, went down with an ankle injury after taking a hit from safety Nick Cross.

The Broncos won this one. Sam Ehlinger led the team in passing with 80 yards (5 for 6). Jason Bean (4-6 for 51 yards) had the only passing touchdown for Indianapolis. Bean also led the team with 24 rushing yards (four attempts).

On defense, Grant Stuard had a team-high seven total tackles. Austin Ajiake also had seven total tackles.

Jason Bean, an undrafted quarterback out of Kansas, connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass with Laquon Treadwell. Indianapolis tried for a 2-point conversion, but failed.

The Colts fumbled the ball at their own 19-yard line. That allowed the Denver offense, led by Zach Wilson, to take over. Blake Watson ran in a 6-yard score to extend Denver's lead.

The Colts went 72 yards on this past drive (nine plays). Tyler Goodson capped off the drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown.

The Colts had two drives during the third quarter. Kedon Slovis, the undrafted rookie out of BYU, was the quarterback for Indianapolis in the third. Slovis went three for four with 39 yards passing.

Tyler Badie ran for an 11-yard touchdown to extend Denver's lead over Indianapolis.

Audric Estime ran to the right side of the field for Denver, but fumbled the ball. Micah Abraham, a Colts cornerback, picked up the ball at the Denver 45-yard line and ran it all the way back for a touchdown.

The Broncos have doubled up the Colts to begin the second half. Denver went on a 10-play, 56-yard drive that was capped off by an Audric Estime 2-yard run.

Halftime: Colts trail Broncos by 3 going into the half

Broncos took the lead once again with a seven-play, 75-yard drive. Wil Lutz finished the drive with a 27-yard field goal.

Bo Nix is 10 for 16 passing with 83 yards and a touchdown. For the Colts on defense, Dallis recorded four total tackles. Cameron McGrone also had four total tackles.

And just like that, the Colts no longer have the ball. Sam Ehlinger threw an interception on the first play of the new series. Keidron Smith picked off the pass for Denver.

On the first play of the new drive, Bo Nix threw a 16-yard pass to Lucas Krull, who then fumbled the ball. Colts cornerback Chris Lammons recovered the fumble.

1:45 left 2Q: Colts tie things up with Evan Hull touchdown

The Colts tied it up after a 1-yard run from Evan Hull. The second-year running back out of Northwestern has ran for 8 yards on five attempts. Sam Ehlinger has completed all five of his attempts for 80 yards. D.J. Montgomery leads the team with two catches for 45 yards.

4:51 left 2Q: Bo Nix throws TD to give Broncos the lead over Colts

After the Colts missed a field goal, Denver went 10 plays for 56 yards. Nix threw a 1-yard pass to Marvin Mims Jr. for a touchdown. Nix is 5 for 9 for 44 yards.

11:01 left 2Q: Colts kicker Matt Gay misses field goal

The Colts had a chance to retake the lead, but kicker Matt Gay missed a 54-yard attempt. It was wide left.

Sam Ehlinger completed both of his passes for 21 yards during the drive.

14:47 left 2Q: Broncos tie things up against Colts with field goal

Bo Nix threw back-to-back incomplete passes to start the second quarter, but they were already close enough for kicker Wil Lutz, who made a 41-yard field goal.

Sam Ehlinger will replace Flacco at quarterback for the Colts in the next series.

Bo Nix, the 12th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, entered the game at quarterback for Denver.

Nix completed two of his four passes for 33 yards.

Anthony Richardson went 2/4 for 25 yards and Flacco was 3/5 for 28 yards.

3:11 left 1Q: Matt Gay gives the Colts its first points of the season

Anthony Richardson is out and Joe Flacco is in. Flacco is in his 17th NFL season.

He started with an 11-yard pass to Adonai Mitchell, the rookie receiver from Texas. Later in the drive, Flacco completed a 12-yard pass to Trey Sermon. Indianapolis moved the ball to the 17-yard line of Denver and ended up getting a 35-yard field goal from Matt Gay.

5:53 left 1Q: Kenny Moore II snags an interception for Colts

Denver began its series at its 20-yard line but moved the ball quickly and made it to the Colts' 43. On 2nd and 20, Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham threw a pass that Kenny Moore intercepted.

Joe Flacco will enter the game at quarterback for the Colts.

Anthony Richardson threw a 19-yard pass to Mo Alie-Cox to begin the Colts' second offensive series. Richardson scrambled for 1 yard in the second play. Jonathan Taylor ran for 2 yards for the third play and Richardson threw a 6-yard pass to Kylen Granson. On 4th and 1, the Colts punted.

The Colts' offense didn't do much in its first action of the season. Jonathan Taylor started things off with a 2-yard run, followed by two straight incomplete passes from Anthony Richardson.

Colts cornerback JuJu Brents will not play today

The second-year defensive back, who attended Warren Central in Indianapolis, will not suit up today because of a minor shoulder injury.

Coach Shane Steichen said on Friday that most of Indianapolis' starters will play against the Broncos. That means Richardson will get his first action since suffering a season-ending shoulder injury against the Tennessee Titans last year. Downs, however, will not suit up after going down with a high-ankle sprain in practice last week.
