Indiana women's basketball locks in seed for 2024 Big Ten tournament

BLOOMINGTON — The Indiana women’s basketball team will be the No. 3 seed in the 2024 Big Ten tournament.

The Hoosiers (23-4; 14-3 Big Ten) didn't have a path to the No. 2 seed once Iowa beat Ohio State, 93-83, on Sunday. They beat Maryland to finish tied in the standings with Iowa, but the tiebreakers gave the Hawkeyes the higher seed.

According to the Big Ten tournament guidelines, the first tiebreaker is the head-to-head record between teams with the same record.

Since Indiana and Iowa split their season series against each other, the seeding was determined by the second tiebreaker —  their winning percentage against the team that finishes the highest position in the regular season conference standings (Ohio State). In cases where there is still a tie, it continues down the standings until one team has the advantage.

The Hawkeyes were 1-1 against OSU while Indiana was 0-1.

This year’s tournament starts on Wednesday, March 6 at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The opening rounds on Wednesday will air on Peacock. The Big Ten Network will televise the rest of the tournament until CBS broadcast the finals on Sunday.

The Hoosiers received a double-bye as one of the top four seeds. The No. 3 seed plays the late game on Friday night, which tips off 25 minutes after the 6:30 p.m. game featuring the No. 2 seed concludes. They will face the winner of No. 6 Michigan and No. 11 Minnesota/No. 14 Rutgers.

Indiana played each of those teams once during the regular season and went 3-0. The closest of the three games was a 66-56 win over Rutgers on the road.

Indiana hasn’t won the tournament since beating Penn State 75-72 back in 2002 when the event was held at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Hoosiers lost to Iowa in the finals of the 2022 tournament.
