Indiana women's basketball closes out regular season with win, but it could be costly

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana women's basketball maintained a double-digit lead the entire second half in a 71-54 win over Maryland on Sunday afternoon.

The Hoosiers (24-4; 15-3 Big Ten) finished the season 14-0 at Assembly Hall and swept the season series against Maryland (17-12- 9-8).

Indiana guard Sara Scalia led all scorers with 19 points and Chloe Moore-McNeil had eight points, eight assists and six rebounds, but fans left the arena in a state of shock after Mackenzie Holmes and Lilly Meister suffered injuries in the second half that knocked them out of the game.

Injury to Mackenzie Holmes ruins Senior Day for Indiana women's basketball

Indiana All-American forward Mackenzie Holmes limped off the court with 1:20 to go in the third quarter and didn't check back into the game.

Holmes hurt her left leg when she took a hard foul while going up for a basket in the post. She was visibly in pain while trying to walk it off and couldn't stay in the game to even attempt the free throws she was awarded. Holmes walked to the locker room accompanied by the team's training staff and remained there until the final minute of the fourth quarter.

She was honored during a pregame Senior Day ceremony alongside Scalia and Arielle Wisne. The forward had 11 points and six rebounds, but was getting regular rest thanks to the comfortable lead IU built up early in the game.

Holmes, who broke the team's career scoring record earlier this season, dealt with injuries to the same knee in 2022 and 2023.

Things got worse for IU when Lilly Meister, Holmes' backup, was shaken up when she landed hard on the floor with less than four minutes to go in the game. She couldn't put any weight on her left ankle as trainers carried her to the bench area.

Indiana went with a small lineup after that with four guards and Yarden Garzon playing center.

Indiana women’s basketball ready to burst Maryland’s bubble

Indiana rode the emotions of Senior Day onto the court by jumping out to a 16-2 lead to start the game. The Hoosiers made their first six shot attempts including a pair of 3-pointers.

They had a more dominant stretch in the second quarter when they held Maryland without any points for seven-plus minutes during a 15-0 run. Garzon and Scalia each hit back-to-back 3-pointers during the run with IU taking a commanding 36-16 lead.

Garzon (12 points) and Scalia (14 points) were a combined 7 of 11 from 3-point range in the half.

Indiana complimented the hot-shooting with a strong defensive effort that left Maryland with very few open looks. The Terps shot 29% in the half and were 2 of 11 from 3-point range as a team. They came into the game averaging 78.8 points per game, ranked 21st in the country, and a top 50 shooting team (44.7%).
