Indiana girls basketball state finals: Predicting IHSAA championship winners

INDIANAPOLIS — Between The Scorers Table, the class-by-class previews and everything else, it feels like I've broken down and analyzed these games from just about every conceivable angle. So for this, the final batch of predictions for the 2023-24 IHSAA girls basketball season, I'll just offer up some final thoughts and get to the bulletin board material.

State finals: Schedule, complete coverage

A: Lanesville (28-1) vs. Marquette Catholic (24-4), 10:30 a.m.

Last Saturday's buzzer-beating triumph over No. 2 Clinton Central punched Marquette Catholic's ticket to Gainbridge Fieldhouse a year earlier than most would have expected and with their entire rotation set to return, coach Katie Collignon's team will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come. But Lanesville's time is now and the championship window is wide open for senior Ava Kerr and juniors Hadley Crosier, Shelby Allen and Hylton Brumley. Crosier officially enters the Miss Basketball discussion as Lanesville, which totaled 130 points at semistate, heads to 2A with back-to-back Class A state championships. PICK: Lanesville 70, Marquette Catholic 55

A preview: Lanesville eyes repeat vs. Marquette Catholic

2A: Brownstown Central (20-9) vs. FW Bishop Luers (19-6), approx. 12:45 p.m.

It's not just that Luers is big. It's the versatility centers Addie Shank and Miley Wareing bring that makes them so darn impressive. Shank brings a set of advanced post moves; Wareing can go end-to-end and play away from the basket. And the Knights also have a couple talented guards in Annika Davis and Reese Rhodehamel. Brownstown Central contained Austin and Eastern Hancock's post players earlier this month, but Luers is an entirely different beast. PICK: Luers 57, Brownstown Central 45

2A preview: Brownstown Central-Bishop Luers is David vs. Goliath

3A: Gibson Southern (25-4) vs. Norwell (23-4), 6 p.m.

I'm really excited for this game. Norwell coach Eric Thornton has finally earned a title shot in his 27th year at the helm with a senior-driven outfit; Gibson Southern's Kyle Brasher holds the reins of a veteran Titans bunch for whom the championship window is wide-open. Norwell's Kennedy Fuelling and Makenzie Fuess vs. Gibson Southern's Gabby Spink and Chloey Graham will be must-see entertainment, but knowing what they're capable of with that 1-3-1, I'm rolling with the Knights. Bonus parlay: Whatever the pretend point total is for GS freshman Paige Schnaus, I suggest picking the over. PICK: Norwell 75, Gibson Southern 74 (OT)

Class 3A preview: Norwell, Gibson Southern paid dues before title shot

4A: Lawrence Central (29-1) vs. Lake Central (26-4), approx. 8:15 p.m.

The Bears boast a starting five capable of beating anyone in the state and have conjured up a lot of magic this run, but there's something about this Lake Central team. The way the Indians play, their mentality and their preparation for this moment, which dates back to last season (and beyond) — not to mention the week coach Joe Huppenthal has had to prepare — has me believing. This is painfully obvious, but Lake Central must take care of the ball and limit turnovers, same as they did at semistate vs. Homestead and Noblesville. If they do, they'll have a fighters' chance. PICK: Lake Central 55, Lawrence Central 52
