Hal Hershfelt, former Clemson women's soccer player, named an alternate to U.S. Olympic team

CLEMSON – In her first season playing professionally, former Clemson women's soccer midfielder Hal Hershfelt was named an alternate to the United States Women's National Team for the 2024 Paris Olympics on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old will travel to France and train with the team for the duration of the Olympics. She was called up to the national team for the first time in May and entered her first USWNT camp in June as a member of the roster, but she did not play in two matches vs. Korea Republic.

Hershfelt's ascension came after playing five seasons with Clemson, where she scored 16 goals and recorded 12 assists in 99 career games (97 starts). Her success led to the Washington Spirit selecting her with the fifth overall pick in the NWSL draft in January. In her rookie season, she has scored two goals, has a 81% accurate pass percentage and has won 22 tackles over 14 games (13 starts).

The USWNT will report on July 8 and play in two exhibition games — July 13 vs. Mexico and July 16 against Costa Rica — before traveling to France. In the Olympics, the U.S. are in Group B and will play on July 25 vs. Zambia, July 28 against Germany and July 31 vs. Australia.

The United States looks to win its first gold medal in women's soccer since 2012.
