Guardians vs. Tigers ALDS Game 3 score, highlights: Cleveland shut out, Detroit leads series

DETROIT — The series turned to Detroit. And after a 3-0 loss on Wednesday, the Guardians will need to win Game 4 in Motown to extend their season by forcing a decisive fifth game in the American League Division Series.

The Guardians routed the Tigers 7-0 in Game 1, but haven't scored since. They dropped Game 2 on a shocking home run allowed by Emmanuel Clase before being shut out again Wednesday.

Game 4 of the best-of-five series is Thursday evening in Detroit.

The Guardians' scoreless innings streak has reached 20 innings, and they will be facing elimination tomorrow in Game 4.

The Guardians have three more outs to end their scoreless streak.

Will Vest struck out Lane Thomas looking to end the eighth inning, and the Guardians have been held scoreless for the last 19 innings in the ALDS.

The Guardians' aggressive pinch-hitting today has left them with Austin Hedges due up third in the ninth inning, which isn't ideal with a three-run deficit.

Matt Vierling makes leaping catch to save at least one run

Tigers third baseman Matt Vierling made a terrific leaping catch to rob David Fry of a hit and take at least one run off the board. Fry hit it hard, but needed to get under it just a touch more to get it over the glove of Vierling.

The Tigers will maintain their 3-0 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.

Guardians have rally threat in 7th inning of ALDS Game 3

Brayan Rocchio worked a two-out walk and Steven Kwan followed with a single. With David Fry coming up, that prompted the Tigers the turn to the right-hander Will Vest.

With the Guardians down 3-0, two runners on and Jose Ramirez lurking on deck, this is the biggest at-bat of the game.

Spencer Torkelson extends Detroit lead in sixth inning; Guardians-Tigers ALDS Game 3 score update

With a runner on second and Eli Morgan on the mound, Spencer Torkelson roped a double down the left-field line to make it a 3-0 Tigers lead.

The Guardians haven't scored since the sixth inning of Game 1 and will need to find some offense fast. Cleveland has had baserunners, but the Detroit has had every timely hit. The Tigers have all of the momentum right now.

Beau Brieske entering game for Tigers in fifth inning

Beau Brieske will enter the game for Detroit with one out in the fifth inning. David Fry, Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor are due up.

Brant Hurter gave up five hits and a walk but no runs in 3 1/3 innings.

The Guardians, again, stranded runners in the fifth and still trail 2-0.

Erik Sabrowski entering game for Cleveland in fourth inning

Alex Cobb's day is done after three innings in favor of Erik Sabrowski.

Sabrowski worked around a particularly bad Josh Naylor error to begin the inning, retiring the next three batters.

Brant Hurter, Tigers leading Guardians

Hurter worked an easy fourth inning, and the Guardians have now been held scoreless in their last 15 innings of the ALDS.

Jake Rogers double leads to Matt Vierling RBI; Tigers lead Guardians in Game 3

Jake Rogers opened the third inning with a double down the left-field line. After moving to third on a groundout, he scored via a sacrifice fly off that bat of Matt Vierling, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Who's winning the Guardians-Tigers game? David Fry pinch-hits for Kyle Manzardo

With the lefty still on the mound, David Fry pinch-hit for Kyle Manzardo, making it two substitutions for the Guardians already. Fry struck out looking and Josh Naylor then grounded out to end the inning, again stranding multiple runners.

The Tigers lead 1-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning.

Jhonkensy Noel pinch-hits for Will Brennan; ALDS Game 3

A perfect example of the status of this series: the Tigers have already made a pitching change, and the Guardians have already put in a pinch-hitter.

When the Tigers went to the lefty Hurter, Jhonkensy Noel came in to pinch-hit for Will Brennan in the second inning. Noel went on to hit a flyout. Bo Naylor then hit a flyout to end the inning with runners stranded on the corners.

This series is like one big chess match.

Guardians, Tigers ALDS Game 3: Keider Montero is done, Brant Hurter is in

Even though Montero had a perfect, six-pitch first inning, the Tigers are taking him out in favor of lefty Brant Hurter.

The Guardians are taking advantage of this change, as Josh Naylor and Lane Thomas opened the second inning with back-to-back singles.

Guardians-Tigers ALDS Game 3 score update: Detroit takes early lead on Riley Greene RBI single

The Tigers are having some early success against Guardians starter Alex Cobb.

Parker Meadows opened the inning with a leadoff single and later, with him on second base, Riley Greene grounded a ball back up the middle to make it a 1-0 Tigers lead in Game 3.

Kerry Carpenter also hit a ball hard to deep center field. The Tigers not only scored, but they're making some good contact.

Guardians-Tigers score: Guardians go 1-2-3 in first inning of ALDS Game 3

That was the opposite of the Guardians' Game 1 first-inning barrage.

Facing Tigers pitcher Keider Montero, the Guardians went 1-2-3 on only six pitches. That's a near-perfect opening for Detroit.

Guardians name Tanner Bibee ALDS Game 4 starter

Not that it was any surprise, but Tanner Bibee has officially been named the Guardians' starter for Thursday's ALDS Game 4. He'll be on normal rest after pitching in Game 1. Depending on what happens in Game 3 today, Bibee will either be tasked with trying to advance the Guardians to the ALCS or save their season from elimination.
