Guardians home opener 2024: Team sets first pitch time around total solar eclipse
The Guardians have set the time for the first pitch to be thrown in 2024 at Progressive Field — weather permitting, of course.
The team announced Thursday that its April 8 home opener will feature a first pitch at 5:10 p.m.
The Guardians spent months working with city officials, even NASA members, as they debated on a first pitch time that would work around the total solar eclipse, which is set to hit Northeast Ohio at 3:13 p.m. and last for roughly four minutes.
From 2:00 p.m. to 4:29 p.m., though, people will need protective glasses to view the eclipse as it's happening around the four-minute spectacle. Plus, the area is expected to welcome hundreds of thousands of people, creating potential traffic and parking issues.
The Guardians were down to either 7:10 p.m. or the now selected 5:10 p.m. for their home opener against the Chicago White Sox. Nearly every recent home opener that featured fans began at 4:10 p.m.
