Grizzlies' Zach Edey missed 1 Purdue game in 139. He's missed 5 of 7 NBA summer league games
Grizzlies center Zach Edey, who had missed five NBA summer league games because of left ankle soreness, departed Thursday's game in Las Vegas with a right ankle injury.
It's a fair question as to how many injuries — and how much time he missed — at Purdue before the 7-foot-4 big man was taken by Memphis as the ninth overall pick in last month's NBA draft.
His durability was a major selling point for scouts during the draft process. Of a possible 139 career games, Edey appeared in 138, which put him fourth all-time in games played at Purdue. His only missed game was because of a non-COVID illness against New Orleans in the 2022-23 season.
Matt Painter, Edey's coach at Purdue, lauded Edey multiple times throughout his senior year for his durability, stating on several occasions that the Boilermakers' success was directly related to Edey's ability to consistently play a high level of minutes.
Edey suffered his left ankle injury on July 8 against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City. He sat the next five games as a precaution, but was made available Thursday against the New Orleans Pelicans. He rolled his right ankle after stepping on the foot of a Pelicans player and left with less than four minutes to go before halftime. He did not return to the game.
The Grizzlies defeated the Pelicans 88-77.
