Grizzlies announce Ja Morant has successful surgery to repair shoulder injury

The Memphis Grizzlies announced on Thursday morning that Ja Morant has had a successful surgery to repair a labrum tear in his right shoulder. Morant is expected to make a full recovery.

A doctor told The Commercial Appeal that Morant should be able to return to full basketball activity in six months. That would give Morant enough time to participate in training camp and preseason action ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Morant was suspended for the first 25 games this season and played nine games before suffering the labrum injury in a Saturday training session. He averaged 25.1 points and 8.1 assists while leading the Grizzlies (14-23) to a 6-3 record when healthy.

Memphis is already taking steps to build its roster around Morant for when he returns. The Grizzlies signed Vince Williams Jr. on Wednesday to a standard contract.

Bismack Biyombo was waived to make room for the move.
