Gold rush! Indiana athletes win more gold at Paris Olympics than Spain, Canada, Brazil.
PARIS – The tense 67-66 victory over France in women’s basketball Sunday not only allowed the United States to tie China in gold medals 40-40 at the Paris Olympics.
The outcome boosted the haul of medals by athletes from Indiana to 20, and gold medals to 10.
Elsewhere, in women’s volleyball, Italy defeated the United States’ defending champions 25-18, 25-20, 25-17. Elkhart’s Annie Drews, a former Purdue player, added a silver medal to the gold she won in 2021.

S-HOCKER! How Cole Hocker, a 21-to-1 longshot, pulled off biggest upset at Paris Olympics
The United States has medaled in an unprecedented five successive Olympics in women’s volleyball.
Notre Dame accounted for nine of Indiana’s 20 medals: four in fencing, two in swimming, one in track and field, one in soccer, one in basketball. American players Jackie Young and Jewell Loyd both represented the Fighting Irish in hoops.
Carmel added four medals: two by 17-year-old swimmer Alex Shackell, a silver by swimmer Drew Kibler, a silver by 40-year-old tennis player Rajeev Ram.
Indiana’s population of 6.8 million would rank 110th among all nations. Its 10 golds and 20 medals would rank 11th (tied with New Zealand) and 13th (tied with New Zealand and Brazil), respectively.
In Paris, the United States won 126 total medals — 67 by women — to China’s 91. Team USA’s total was in line with recent Olympics: 113 in 2021, 121 in 2016, 104 in 2012, 112 in 2008, 101 in 2004.
Likewise, Team Indiana’s count has been steady: 20 in 2024, 20 in 2021, 19 in 2016.
Paris featured rare gold medals by runner Cole Hocker, cyclist Chloe Dygert and wrestler Sarah Hildebrandt.
Hocker, a 21-to-1 longshot in the 1,500 meters, ran to one of the biggest upsets in any sport here, and one of the biggest in Olympic track and field history.
Column: Cole Hocker never wavered in his quest to become the best miler in the world.
No Indiana runner in 120 years had won an Olympic medal at a distance longer than 400 meters. In St. Louis in 1904, Muncie’s Jim Lightbody won golds in the 800, 1,500 and steeplechase.
In track cycling, Dygert, of Brownsburg, was part of a U.S. foursome winning its first-ever gold in team pursuit. Dygert, 27, has four Olympic medals, two less than the record by a female cyclist from any nation and one less than Jennifer Valente, who was with her in team pursuit.
Valente won a repeat gold in the omnium Sunday.
Among Hoosiers in all sports, only Evansville swimmer Lilly King, with six, has more medals than Dygert. King has stated Paris would be her last Olympics.
Hildebrandt, of Granger, won the110-pound weight class. She became the second Indiana woman to win an individual gold medal, after King in the 100-meter breaststroke in 2016.
